I think I remember someone in this thread asking about AT&T DSL vs. Time Warner. This is what I found out when I called each service:

AT&T (Wisconsin # 888-866-3546)
Speed: Pro (1.5 to 3.0 Mbps) - speed depends on distance from central office...call to find out

Prices:
1) $17.99/month for the first year then $34.99/month thereafter
2) $79.99 (not including $50 mail-in rebate) Wireless Gateway (replaces wireless router): has one wired ethernet connection and 802.11b/g wireless

Free activation and free self-install (I did this at home, and it is really easy)

Local phone service is required and costs $17.00 for the bare minimum.

Basic cable TV costs $46.10/month with a $30 installation. So, total cost for DSL is $81/month for the first year and then $98 thereafter.

The only wait is getting the local phone service set up. This usually takes less than 1-week.

--------------

I'm seeing $17.99 + $17.00 per month plus some activation costs, so I can't quite see the $81/month cost. By the way, you can always get the current "special" price on DSL by committing to another 12-month subscription, so you're very unlikely to ever have to pay the full $34.99/month fee for DSL. YOu just have to mark your calendar and call and ask for the special when your time is up. They sure won't TELL you about it.

On the other hand, there is often a delay in activating DSL, at least if you have the problem of moving from another AT&T account elsewhere. THis is irritating.

Edited to add: I have the less-than-pro speed, for which I am currently paying $12.99/month, I think, and am quite happy with it.

I had a dream sorta like the movie Groundhog Day last night. I was reliving the first day of my class's orientation last year, and I was the only one aware that it was being relived...I knew everyone as well as I do now, but everyone else was oblivious and meeting everyone for the first time. It was sorta freaky.

i was lead to believe that we were supposed to dress nice for our orientation. I don't want to. Can we really wear jeans and stuff like that?

unless it's changed (which apparently it may have) you can typically wear whatever you want during the first two years, orientation included. with the exception of when you have patient encounters, it's just like college. for the first day, i'd split the middle--khakis and polos for dudes, female-equivalent for chicks--especially skorts, possibly the best fashion invention ever. i mean, any time you combine two things like that, you're bound to have a great product...sporks, knorks, flabongo, etc. 👍

skorts? ha. I'll be wearing my hypercolor shirt, then.

I wore a skort to the first day of orientation; I didn't feel over or underdressed.

i think a trendy skort with a well-matched hypercolor shirt is great. it says "i'm professional and trendy, but i'm not trying too hard." and, a skort is versatile. last i heard, skorts were becoming the new low rise jeans. 😎

Only if they're worn with layered slouch socks.

hold up. Are you the girl who gave tours? Because I think you're the sister of Alexis? who interviewed at Northwestern and MCW with me - does that sound right?

aaaaand you were in organic with me and two other SDNers I'm not supposed to name.

You're just saying that to drive me crazy. I have a feeling I'll be thinking wistfully of the slow pace of Scwabacher's class pretty soon.

What happens when we start attaching to inanimate objects? I suppose next I'll be sitting in the front in biochem class, nudging everyone and saying, I 😍 ATP! :scared:

I think I'll go on my vacation now. I'll either come back crazier or saner. But how will I know the difference?
however, I CAN attest the fact that you'll be sitting in the front 😉

You mean there are other rows? Actually, I'm hoping to be one of those people who thrive by NOT going to lecture. We'll just have to see.

oh well. I did like biochem (501), so I'm hoping that I'll be kinda interested in biochem.

I find that highly unlikely. 😉 I sit in the back 2/3 of lectures, and I'm thinking I'll have trouble not attending, but the 8:20 am factor may make me skip fairly often.

Wow, men in skorts in Class of '09. What will the men in my class wear to step up? Kilts?

'08 has at least one guy that wears a kilt, somewhat routinely.

He even wore it to boards... 🙂

Yeah. Weird! You remember her name? I remember she said she interviewed with someone both places. She's starting at USC next week.

I wasn't there today. I'll be at the org fair tomorrow and giving tours on Thurs and Friday I think are the days. I was in Tucson, now as I'm typing I'm in the Admirals Club for American Airlines in Chicago waiting for my flight to Milwaukee.

Glad you decided to come to MCW.

Hey Ashers, I think you're my Big Sib!!! 🙂

Wow, the first day of orientation was everything I thought it would be and more. I'm having a hard time controlling my excitement inside. I don't know how anyone else feels, but I'm looking forward to a drink tonight. More fun to be had

What??? Excitement over orientation??? Wait till they give you your elevator pass 😛

Congrats to all on their first day !!!

Yes, I am. The coordinators told me a couple weeks ago b/c one of them is on the board and knew I had "talked" to you before. 😉 I just didn't say anything because I was waiting for you to find out as a suprise type dealy. =) Stop by OSIG at the fair.

Ashleigh, the tours are WEDNESDAY and Thursday, FYI!

meeting some of you today was splendid! though I gotta say that very few of you introduced yourselves as your SDN names. I was very disappointed.

Well... I told Scotttennis you were AgentSplat after he was like (to me) "You're Ashers right?"

You know, you say that, and the only two people who came up to me last year were Andy and April. So I think you should just be quiet, you little hippocrite!! 😱

Now that you guys have your MCW email accounts, get facebook with MCW and join MBIG. =) We couldn't have that group at the Org Fair today.

I hear and obey. I'm a little confused by Facebook and this very special interest group. Apparently there's a free lunch, but we have to bite Marc to get it? Is there a barbeque? I think I'm hopelessly out of touch here.

Maybe if you do community service for MBIG you get a free lunch. You have to bring that up with the Supreme Tractor Pull Poobah.

So untrue. I came up to you during the org fair and had an entirely awkward 3 minute conversation built around SDN and my username. Excuse me while I go cry myself to sleep, as it appears I am socially invisible.

By the way, to hijack this thread even further...

Do any of the M3s or M4s lurking around here have any comment on whether or not we should be buying those nifty diagnostic kits that cost like $500? I'm hoping to avoid that expenditure at all costs, but would like to know how you/your classmates managed to pull that off.

Also, is Bates Guide to the Physical Exam useful, or should I pick up the pocket guide instead?

Now back to your regularly scheduled innane conversation.

And apparently you also dont remember marc and myself talking to you during the org fair. As repercussion, will be running for JSU president.

Hey!! Any of the M1s going to the Chancery tonight? Great times had by all.

I haven't been to any of the other nighttime activities cuz I left town. Went and saw Body World at the science museum in St Paul.

Everyone having a good time with orientation? Enjoy it even though it's boring and could be done in one day. It's all downhill from here.

I am! I'm going to the State Fair first, though, so I'll toddle in late at some point. Orientation is fine. Some things are dull and silly, and I got Conference Neck the first day (where you sit in a chair staring a the front so long your head won't turn anymore), but I'm slowly getting to retain a few people's names and am starting to feel, well, oriented.

Does AMSA sell nitrile gloves, too, or just latex? If I'll need to order nitrile gloves (I have a slight latex sensitivity), how do I figure out what size?

Apparently last year we sold powder-free latex and poly-vinyl latex free. Would the poly-vinyl ones do it for ya? As for size, um, not sure, I wore medium and large because that's what I'd worn in the past (medium for latex and large for nitrile). To be honest, I bought my gloves last year at Sam's club and Costco.

Actually, come to think of it, a lot of glove boxes have sizing charts on them, so you may be able to figure out your size from that.

...For M2s-to-be, since you didn't ask, here's a quick run-down on those:
Robbins path--very good. don't read it all, but it's great for clarification
BRS path--use this during the course and you'll be set for boards. also good for pre-block exam review.
micro--didn't use anything during the course, but found high yield to be very helpful during board review. may be worth it to buy this early and use it for the class as well.
pharm--notes and coops are fine. i bought lippincott and can count on one hand the number of times i used it
bates physical exam book--bought it. still have it. good for help on H&Ps but don't think i've ever used it to actually help with a physical exam. however, as i've been told, if you want to master medicine, you have to master bates 😉

and that's my piece. have a good rest of the year. get out and enjoy the day or two of non-rain in the next week or two--the books can wait an hour or two. later, folks.

I finally found the book thing from Hawkeye. Xandie, do you agree with the rundown? I bought the path book on amazon because it was in my Goldbox for cheap. I'm guessing the micro book isn't as necessary as wheater's?

Polyvinyl would be fine, I'm sure. You guys rock!

I used a nitrile glove and never had smell on my hands after anatomy lab.

we use Dash brand nitrile with aloe at work...i love them.

One of my lab mates supplied us with nitrile gloves whenever she could because her mom is an RN and would just take them from the hospital. When I didn't have nitrile gloves, I double gloved most of the time.

I used a single layer of nitrile gloves too. They were a little bit more expensive, but they can be found at Walgreens and really helped minimize the lab-funk that I brought home.

As treausurer of AMSA, I feel I need to push the glove sale. I think we might be in charge of that. I can't remember...

That being said I bought my gloves from Walgreens. They were having some kind of deal, like 3 for $4 or something. Can't remember if I got latex or vinyl. Definitely non-powder. I hate that stuff.

I only used one pair of gloves at a time cuz I'm cheap and didn't want to use 2 pairs everytime I went to lab. I found that if you use a scented lotion (i.e. bath and body works - a stronger scent) BEFORE you put your gloves on your hands won't smell as much like cadaver when you leave.

Oh, and I'm one of the Big sib/Little sib coordinaters. I hope the matches are working. We don't have much to go on other than hometown. If ya filled out the stalker book, we had undergrad and relationship status too, and would try to take that into consideration, but only about 125/200-some had filled it out.

Ashers said:
AMSA is definitely in charge of it since Scott and I are the AMSA fundraising chairs.

That explains why I got forwarded an email about it. Not sure what I'm supposed to do about it though.

Anyway...carry on...

That's why I'm trying to find out how much gloves were sold for. Seems like none of us bought AMSA gloves though.

I can field this one, I think...

Dx kits: definitely NOT NECESSARY. however, it is cool to go home for christmas and impress the fam. also, you can have some fun with friends and eye exams. i bought it and haven't used it much. maybe if my (yet to be conceived) kid goes to med school i can pass it down. if i had it to do over again i probably wouldn't buy it.

bates: good book, though you won't read it. i do still refer to it very occasionally, and it was helpful for writing H&Ps as M2/3. probably a good book to have around, though again, not necessary to do well. however, i have been told that in order to master medicine, you must first master bates.
