MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So yeah, samenewme saw me after the concert and gave me the oreo brownie that comes in the boxed lunch.

Those brownies are heaven-sent. If I had known that they were serving them at the Jazz recital, I would have made a special trip in to school just for the dessert. As it is, I skipped the performance because I didn't want to be the heppest cat in the room, and definitely not because I'm too lazy to remember extracurricular events.

Sorry I couldn't be there...I had to guide the SEMA-lings to the social with the emergency department faculty and residents.

This could have been a fantastic show. I am imagining a gaggle of ADHD kids with helmets on, touching everything in sight that isn't bolted down, and wandering off inexplicably on the way to the social.

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Made my day.

Ashers, I have to confess I don't really like chocolate, so I wasn't making a big sacrifice by giving you my brownie. If it had been an oatmeal raisin cookie, you would have been out of luck. But I'm glad it sustained you.

I love chocolate and brownies, except not so much those ones. I've been known to give them away, but I was so hungry I ate it. 😉 But seriously, I appreciated it. =) If it had been an oatmeal raisin cookie, I would've politely declined -- I don't like raisins. 😀

I liked the part where Sabina stood up Monday morning and told us we did so well on this block (no help from me, I'm afraid) that we practically caught up to what our averages should be this time of year. Go, us?
ah, I wasn't there for that.

You look very intent over there.

Ah, the age old practice of library stalking. Nice to see you kids are keeping the tradition alive and well. Let me know if you guys need me to install a webcam so you can keep tabs on me, too.

I thought you didn't bring your wireless card. I'm going to fail or maybe just pass 😉 due to ignoring it for the past 5 weeks due to lack of studying.

I miss immunology!!!!!!
I don't bring it when I'm desperately behind 😛 I usually bring it with me though because I can't handle non-stop studying. Half an hour of studying + half an hour of not studying > an hour of studying. My brain saturates quickly, but it can take in a lot of information quickly as well.

Please do, and send me the link. kthx

Looks like you're nice and relaxed before the test, and preparing to kick micro's butt. I, on the other hand, am preparing to be killed by micro.
Don't get too lonely without me, mmmkay? I'll be back (probably). Darn interviews using all the good nerd rooms. 😡

You need to summon the third dragon of the green netherworld to aid in your quest to gather the iridescent stones of knowledge and forge the Katana of Truth.

Ninja confidence, my friend. You've still got three long days before that micro test and an intellect sharper than a blade.

Evidently I'm better at sarcastic quips than motivational speeches, but you get the gist. You'll rock it.

No one stole your stuff, but I had multiple bids on ebay. I'm gonna need your Netter.

Yeah, I couldn't believe you didn't put a reserve on that stuff. Can't wait to have my very own Netter paperweight for my desk! You sure charge a lot for shipping though...

Dude, shipping's the way to ensure you make money on ebay.

So I guess I can't persuade you to just shove the copy of Netter's into my open mailbox and call it even, then?

So I guess I can't persuade you to just shove the copy of Netter's into my open mailbox and call it even, then?

Well... since you already paid... I guess I could you could get some money back, but then the original owner might take it back. The safest thing is for you to come to class to get it.

Don't forget, it is a book, and books are heavy, therefore, there is still the handling fee. 😉

7 hours without a post? Inconceivable!

You know, I don't think that word means what you think it means.

That's not what The Princess Bride told me.

By the way, I should really buy that movie soon.

The drop-off is going down tomorrow. The camel flies over the moon when the rainbow drops the lysogenic banana.

I was wondering if you typed "inconceivable" with a lisp.

During football games they always show advertisements for the schools that are playing. Why do they always show students doing things that no student ever gets to do? If you are a bio 211 student you don't get to design life-saving research experiments for the space shuttle missions. I realize that purdue is trying to overcome the fact that nobody outside of Indiana gives a damn about it but c'mon...

Another thing about football. If you were a space alien, and some of you are so you can chime in here, and you were observing a football game wouldn't you wonder why all the brown people were down on the field and all the not brown people were standing in a circle around the brown people?

Last year, at the University of Oregon, football was neon yellow for some god-awful reason.

yikes. note the nike swoosh. That means that just about every modern structure on the campus was paid for by nike.

okay, i have some more questions.

i've talked to some MCW alums who say they never went to class, yet they are in good residency programs. someone please elaborate; i am intrigued.

also, is anatomy lab as stinky and time-consuming as i fear it will be? and are dissections only for CHA first semester? please say the ventilation system is okay....

thanks 🙂

I'm one of the stupid ones... I can't convince myself to NOT go to class.

Anatomy smells bad, but you get used to it. If you can ID a lung, you should be fine for lab. 😉 It's phys where the pulmonary section is hard.

Anatomy lab is time consuming...your grade will probably correlate with how much time you spend in there.

The population of various classes usually depends on who is lecturing, not on the subject. The 2nd year people may dissagree because it sounds like some of their classes are hard to sit through. You'll figure out which classes you can afford to miss. For example, I don't feel guilty if I accidentally sleep through biochem. If I'm up I'll go to class though.

On a darker note, if block 2 was supposed to be so hard why are the class averages so high? 90% as an average?

Also, on the biochem final, are the questions similar to the midterms or do they pick another set of minutia to jab us in the eyes with?

Our averages were pretty high during Block 2 last year as well. I think it's the combo of the class as a whole working hard because they've been told how nasty Block 2 is, along with the fact that you guys are probably coming into your own a little bit and learning what style of studying works best for each of you. Either way, well done.

As far as the biochem final goes, the questions are at the same level of detail, and on different factoids for the most part. What most classes here do is ask the professor for each lecture to write 5 questions right away. They pick 3 to be on the midterm exam, and then 2 of the questions for each lecture end up as fair game for the final. So yeah, hate to break that joyous piece of news for you guys, but there it is.

You're such a kill joy. 😉

Some how, I managed to bring my biochem percentage up on the final. I quit studying about 6pm. Watched Simpsons, Arrested Development, and a bunch of other TV. I also stared outside the window and watched it snow. I just quit caring. I'm about at the point with bacteriology. =(

I'm pretty sure that prior to the biochem final I studied right up until midnight and then had one of those fun-filled nights in which you keep dreaming about the subject you have been studying and your mind is working out problems while you are asleep. I just loooove those.

Then again, at the time I was close enough to a grade cut-off that I felt like it was really important to do as well as possible on the final to ensure I didn't move down. Turns out that I was only off of my average for the midterms by like 2% on the final, so I probably didn't have to freak out quite so much. I would have been much better watching Arrested Development. Wouldn't touch the Simpsons though...that show jumped the shark about 4 years ago.

I believe that the Biochem final was probably a Tuesday, since I know I watched Arrested Development... that'd make Simpson's on a Monday, therefore, a rerun. 😉

Biochem was a class where I needed a 100% to honor, and like a 65% to keep a high pass.

Neuro -- I needed 83/82 questions right to honor and like a 50% or something like that to keep a high pass... that's motivation to study right there.

One of the guys I study with was in that same kind of situation. He spent all of about 4 hours on the subject, and I think that was just because he was bored at the time.

Me, I needed something like a 92% to get the Honors. I worked out how many problems I could get wrong and everything. Then I took the test and got that number +1, which put me at a 92.5 or 93.5, so I needed them to round up to the nearest percentage to get the grade. I e-mailed Dr. Neitz to ask whether they would round, and after checking my score he assured me I had the grade no problem. Not my finest moment, I admit, and I promise I will never be that anal about a score again in my life, but I still wonder how they did the math on that one...

Oh, and kids, the moral of the story is this: learn from my first year foibles. Worrying this much about any grade is just stupid, and will not help in the long run. Derm is just not that interesting, and you don't want to end up with my prehypertension diagnosis over it.

Hey Ashleigh, I hate to break it to ya, but I think asunshine was talking about the actual ventilation of the anatomy lab, not the human ventilation.

Anyhoo, to answer the question, I'm a non-class goer. As in I stopped going to all lectures, regardless of subject or professor in August or maybe early September of first year. The only exception is ethics this year. I go to that simply to know what's gonna be talked about it small group.

I don't think it really says anything about the school though. No matter what school, I still probably wouldn't go to lecture. It's all about how you learn best.

As for time spent in lab...I think that depends on how well you know Netter before you get there that day and how efficient you are with the time spent there. I know I wasted a lot of time in lab turning it into social hour.

anatomy is only first semester.

lol... oops! So much for study breaks helping clear my head. Looks like I"m just getting myself even more confused due to my inability to read and interpret. =) Ventilation system sounded like another way to say respiratory system to me. 😀

On the anatomy final, I needed a 101% to go up a grade and a 14% to stay where I was... my best friend and I watched girlie movies and "went through old tests" the night before that final. It was fantastic, especially after passing biochem by what should have been one question (they moved the grade cutoff down afterwards... I ended up passing by ten questions or something silly like that). And it's sad that I remember that.

Then there's always the people who miss getting the grade they want by 1 point. Stupid phys. =(

Stupid biochem =( ...and CTB =(

One point (that's raw points, not percentage points) over the entire semester for either of those classes and I would have been bumped up a grade.

new plan: I'm going to sit down and calculate if I can even get honors in biochem. Then, I will adjust my alcohol intake accordingly.

Ashers: Is your name pronounced ash-lee or ash-lay? I'm just trying to figure out how to pronounce that street called Burleigh.
