MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not feeling as awful as I was about the whole thing last week. Not sure why; I think I realize that if I study a decent amount, the worst thing that will happen is that I will pass everything, and at the end of the week I will be done studying.

I hope I'm studying enough to do a little better than just passing everything, but right now I just can't get all wound up about it. This is unlike me. Perhaps pod people have taken over my mind. I, for one, welcome my pod people overlords.

Pod people only invade your CNS if you are immunocompromised.

Great. Now I'm not allowed to be immuncompromised.

I have been compiling a list of things you can't do if you don't want to be sick:
Don't wear shoes because you'll get tinea pedis.
Don't go barefoot because you'll get hookworm.
Don't eat raw oysters because you'll get Hep A.
Don't eat poop because you'll get all sorts of things. (Admittedly, there are a number of things in this list I have never wanted to do anyway).
Don't poop in the yard.
Don't sleep because the pinworm mama will lay eggs.
Don't go camping because of giardia.
Don't take your baby to Africa.
If you go to malaria country, take your antimalarial prophylaxis so you won't get malaria.
Don't take the antimalarial prophylaxis because it is toxic.

Feel free to add your own favorites.

Worst block of micro (and pharm). Ewww! *shudder*

In 9th grade, I was paranoid of walking around barefoot or with slippers on because I was afraid I'd get hookworm. My bio teacher told us it lives in Hawaii.

Boo! Dr. McNally promised us it was the BEST block!

Just to cheer you guys up a bit... this isn't as bad as the spring semester! 😀
Ah, but during spring semester, I know that my career of 100% studying will be at an end, at long last. I'm sure M3/M4 have a ton of difficult aspects to them, but I came to med school to become a doctor, not a bookworm. At college graduation, I was glad that my studying was not yet coming to an end. This May, I will be glad that my studying is winding down. Yes, I know you study during rotations.

F_expected/ F is decreasing so does that mean that interest in this thread is exceeding your expectations?

don't get all started with your smart person talk in here, buddy. I've been f_expecting since you were in rubber pants.

 I was f_expecting you to wash those pants before you returned them.

About halfway through the path exam, I was wondering how much my grade would plummet if I failed an exam. Thank God the second half of that test was significantly easier.

Perhaps I am an old curmudgeon, but I do not consider it a hardship to be required to perform long division to two significant figures on an examination without a calculator. It's a pain in the patootie, sure, but it's not so awful that I'd be going onto a forum to complain that it's too hard and so unfair because there were two answers with the same first digit and the second digits weren't different enough for me to guess successfully in my head.

Interviews: Done

Thank you letters: Done

Rank List: Um, wait. Rank list? Oh crap.

That's how I did my phys final. No calculator for me. I was surprised I could still do long division.

What programs do you favor?

I thought it was dumb that we had to do it, but it wasn't difficult to do. I think they should have just thrown on the online calculator that we had in phys, but I don't think that it's unreasonable to expect that we can do it with a whiteboard.

when do you have to rank them? and other than location, what kinds of things make a big difference for you?

The Urology rank order list is due Jan 3rd at 4:30 pm EST. But who's counting?

My list is influenced by location, training, the faculty I've met, and the residents in the program. I'm trying to find a place where I really felt like I fit in, and would be happy. Of the places I listed, MCW fits the bill for certain, and the others are places I've had a good feeling about after interview day (liked the residents, enjoyed talking with faculty, nice facilities, etc.). I put reputation down pretty low for two reasons. One, reputation does not necessarily equal good resident education. And two, who cares about reputation if I'm miserable for five or six years.

The thing with Urology is that the AUA has pretty tight standards for training, so other than a handful of "top" places, most others are really similar. So for me, it comes down to fitting in, being happy, and liking the people I'm going to be working with.

Yay Don!

Tell me I'm not crazy... thirteen interviews down, at least four (possibly six, but not really) to go. Nonsense, I tell you. Additionally, I'm expecting a Urology Match Day page sent DIRECTLY to me. None of this forum nonsense. Me love you long time.

Just got home from another trip, now in Milwaukee for nine days. In a row! Very exciting. Also, currently being featured at the Family Medicine Department. Here all week kids, catch the show. Ask Gimlet, it's hilarious. Puppets and everything.

you are so getting visited after the surgery exam.

i'm really gonna miss surgery. radiology will be useful but i don't know if i can make it sitting in a dark room all day...i might have to quadruple my caffeine intake.

That's why I went interventional rads for the upcoming month. All the opportunities for asocialism that regular rads has with more opportunities to stick, poke, prod, and catheterize patients for a change of pace!

See you guys on rads next month.

I'll be the one with the "checked out/stressed about match day" look.

Example of a talkative patient: Xandie
Example of a silent patient: not Xandie

Why do people find it entertaining to point out that I'm talkative? Wow, how very observant of you. Seriously.

I would just like to point out in the time it took for him to reply to your e-mail he could have easily re-taped his glasses or realigned his pocket protector...See what I did there? Pointing out the extra obvious fact that he is a nerd. That's in these days, right? Pointing out the painfully obvious in order to diminish our own sad truths. God I wish I was that cool. Someone get that guy a cookie.

Actually, I'm betting it's not observation. It looks more like careful reading of the CER study guide from a previous year looking for familiar names.

Oh my Gosh, is that thing still circulating around? Steve Kotsonis is the biggest butthead in the world (I think it was him). I can't believe it's still kicking around. Hope it helps.

samenewme is correct. 😉 The example of the confused patient was Dr. Novoa-Takara, and the example of the language barrier was Dr. Wong-Riley. I'm kinda surprised these things get circulated...

who are you?

My vote stands - get him a cookie. He was SO INCREDIBLY COOL before that last act od genius, he should have a cookie. With sprinkles.

Again I am awed by both of you. Did it take long - to become so witty and skilled at simple mocking? Was this an inherited trait or did you learn this along the way? Did being mocked all your lives help your plight to become so gifted or where you the kids who picked on people before they had the chance to pick on you? That was always my favorite. The ones who were so pathetic they had to resort to…well, this?
And of course I’m trolling ~ and who could think of a better place to randomly select than MCW’s SND forum; makes complete sense…as does this entire line of idiocy.
Good day gentlemen – clearly a loose use of the term. 😎

It isn't as big of a deal as the message board thing makes it seem. The 93 should've been 99 or something so that everyone who knew how to calculate the sensitivity could just estimate it and move on.

I love how med students freak out if they're asked to anything beyond binge and purge.

Hey, look who disappeared. I had a feeling that someone with a lengthy ban history decided to try their luck in here.
