I have been accepted to both Medical College of Wisconsin and Wright State (Boonshoft) School of Medicine. I am an Ohio resident so it would be something like $20k-25k more a year to attend MCW. Additionally, the cost of living in Milwaukee is higher than Dayton. My interview at Wright State was less than impressive but my interview at MCW was fantastic. MCW has a lot more research funding than Wright State but I'm not sure if that entirely matters as I'm interested in IM, peds, EM. Wright State is like 90 minutes from home compared to 7 hours away for MCW. How much should cost be a factor in my decision? Anyone have any insights about these schools?

Would you be covering the full cost of attendance with loans such that it's another 80-100k of debt or do you have substantial savings ?

IMO, MCW is a stronger school and might provide better education and opportunities. But 100k is considerable.

No, I would likely be covering the full COA with loans. I think I objectively agree that MCW is stronger but wrapping my head around the extra debt is difficult.

Yeah, tough call. Let's say you come out making $200k. Living like a resident your first 2-3 years, you could probably pay off the difference in 1-1.5 additional years. You might talk to (PM) some current students (including MS4's) at both schools to get an idea on their experience especially with rotations and residencies. I'd lean toward MCW but that's just me.

Also, there is a Wright State vs. Kentucky comparison down a little ways on this forum. Might read through that thread as it may shed light on and/or confirm some concerns about Wright State. Good luck!

I think you should choose wright state. MCW is good, but not great enough to choose the more expensive option. Wright state has a large class of fun people and that 90 minute drive home will be a great thing in med school! Can’t go wrong with either imo.

MCW is really not great enough in terms of research to consider that trade off. Home state helps when you are applying to residencies! You get more in your region and state.

If you’re interested in IM, peds, and EM, you should choose Wright St 100%. Your future loans will thank you. Choosing a mid-tier school over a low-tier school for $100k would be ill-advised. Plus, being close to family is a big deal. Reach out to MCW and see if they will give you some aid since you have some leverage. If not, congratulations on getting a great deal on your MD. Thousands of people (me) are not as lucky.

I would rate them both as mid tier very equal.
