narrowed it down to two:

for me...
Tufts:
lived in boston for 6 years, have friends there
love the city
want to do mph as well as md, got into the MD/MPH 4 year program
felt really good visiting the school
BUT soooo expensive

MCW:
my family now lives in milwaukee (moved there when I was in undergrad in MA)
was very happy leaving the school after the interview
know some of the profs (doing reasearch have met them, made friends with a few)
they produce great clinicians
less expensive
no public health to speak of...

Wow, kind of sounds like you're stuck between a pillow and soft place 😉

I think both choices would be pretty good. If you'd be happy in both places, I suppose the financial aspect would lean you closer toward MCW. Being close to family would also probably be a positive; although if you're used to the distance, it may not be as big of a deal. Tufts would probably be more familiar for you having lived for so long in MA, so that may be taken into consideration too. I suppose it comes down to how much you wanna get that MPH while working on your MD. I just suppose that if you endup going to MCW and regretting not having the opportunity for the MPH, you may have that one regret which may slightly sour the experience for you. I'm not sure whether MCW is actually a state or private institution; if it's the latter, I doubt there's that big of a difference in tuition, and if you get the MPH as a bonus, I think that may sway things more for Tufts. I think and hope that whichever you pick, you'll still be pretty well off. Good luck!

LOL,
yes, I am in no way complaining, just trying to chose. There is a significant price difference. Tufts 41,000 v 28,000 for MCW (private, but price reduction for instate)

I love Tufts, it was my first choice, but if you think you'd be happy at either school, then I'd definitely go with MCW.

Don't forget the difference in cost of living. I would imagine Boston to be quite a bit more expensive than Milwaukee in that regard.

it's an impossibly difficult decision. I went through a similar one last year. ended up choosing the cheap school. At this point, I feel that was the wrong decision, hopefully when I'm repaying I will feel differently, but I'm not sure that I will. Of course, as others have mentioned, it is definitely a blessing to have two good choices 🙂

I'd recomment MCW. I think Tufts is the single most expensive medical school in the nation. A friend of mine will soon graduate from Tufts. He said it was OK, but I didn't get the sense that there was anything special about the school. I attend a school pretty close to MCW. Some of the students from my school have gone up to MCW to study on the weekend, for electives, interviews, etc. We have also had some students match there, including at least 4 from this year's class. I hear it has excellent facilities. As mentioned earlier, while Boston can be fun, it is expensive. I hear it's crowded and hard to drive in, find parking, etc. You should choose MCW!!!

We're all very friendly here at MCW. We've got really active student orgs, a very helpful administration, and great facilities. Workrooms with entire walls that function as dry-erase/whiteboards, anyone? Revolving door at the entrace? Woohoo!!!

Edit: I should add though, that if the MPH is very important to you, Tufts seems much more logical. Though you can always get the MPH some other time after you are done with MD.

Feel free to PM me with any other MCW questions.

thanks all for your input. I would love to hear from those you have been voting for Tufts...
I must say the revolving door intrance to MCW is a plus...could be the tipping point agent splat!

Well... Boston is pretty goshdarned cool, I don't know about Milwaukee, but I love Boston with a passion. It's a city that has a distinct energy in it, full of young and brilliant people, and it's kinda cool living life on the edge with all the crazy drivers (not to mention the pedestrians. You can't help but ask yourself, "is today the day I am a MVA victim? Is today my last day?"). Tufts has a cooler sounding name than MCW, so when people as you where you go to school, you could say, "Tufts," instead of "Medical College of Wisconsin"-- Tufts sounds better and takes less time to say. Imagine all the time you could save saying "Tufts" instead of "Medical College of Wisconsin"-- that's like probably 20 minutes total during your lifetime, and 20 minutes is one damned good power nap.

With a lame argument like that, I'd say go for MCW over Tufts. Seriously, "the name sounds cooler, so you should shell out 20k more!" wtf?

I know... when I wrote that post I honestly didn't think that anyone would ever take me seriously (because no one ever does 🙁) For once in my life someone does take what I say seriously, and whammo!!!

Anyway, to the op: unless you really really really really want to go to Tufts over MCW, then I'd go to MCW and save yourself the money. Otherwise, see you next year.

p.s. just keep in mind that Tufts mascot is better than MCW (what is MCW's mascot anyway, a bottle of beer, a wedge of cheese? No clue). Jumbo the elephant rules!!!

Well, I for one took you seriously, and just told MCW, "I'm going to Tufts unless you change your name."
They told me to get lost...

Did you ask them about the mascot?

If you read US News rankings, you'll find that 50% of the school's score depends on coolness of the name combined with the kick-assness of the mascot. However, these factors are considered somewhat subjective, which is why Tufts is ranked 42nd instead of 1st (Harvard, I mean what kind of a name is THAT? Totally overrated.)

I am MCW's mascot. there's pictures of me on all of the apparel and coffee mugs.

If Agent Splat is MCW's mascot, definitely go to Tufts.
