MD Class of 2017: When to quit your day job?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
vacation in June (3wks!) gonna do some short trips/staycation for a bit! then back to work until mid-July or so (basically right before I start school =/ I need the money)

I am realizing that I may need to find another day job for the next couple months in order to make it all the way to the first loan disbursement. Boo.

Everyone seriously needs to do what they want after getting an acceptance. It'll be your last days of freedom before medical school starts, and then all hell breaks lose.

Once you have that acceptance in hand, the song and dance you put on for ADCOMs can come to an end. You can then do what you're passionate about. For real this time.

I'm quitting at the end of June. Hello 5 week break involving cabins on the lake and being downright lazy until classes start in August.

Leaving work at the end of June, then spending July all along the west coast - camping, music festivals and beach time.

This is a super hard decision to make. I am really having problems deciding when I should leave.

Done the first Friday of June!! I really enjoy my job but I really want to live with my SO, sleep more, read & perhaps knit something. We'll be traveling a bit in CA & TX and that will be nice but I am particulalry excited about warm weather and adopting a dog 😀 Then again if my paper gets accepted & requires revisions I may spend some of my summer working on that but it should not take too long...

You should at least have some time off to sleep in and do nothing. What stopping you from picking a date?

I'm jealous of you being able to quit now. I used all my savings applying and interviewing so I have to work right up until I start school. Luckily I don't have to move to a new city. I think I'll give myself a week off before the start though.

Just sent in my letter, actually - officially done in mid-May. Will be doing some part-time work at the school but no serious obligations and definately plant to take 2-3 weeks off right before school starts.

I had to think about this, but the first thing is just growing up in poverty. I don't really have the typical med students socioeconomic background and it is harder to let go of a sure pay check when you don't have that kind of support. The second thing is I have become very accustom to having discretionary money. If I stopped working I would have to stop all discretionary spending...

The second one isn't as hard as you would think. Ok, I know it's hard to imagine, but if you are fine with entertaining yourself (and take up loads of free hobbies) then it isn't bad.

I haven't worked more than a handful of days all year (2013).

I'm finish mid June. My coworkers think I should quit now... That would be AWESOME!!! I'd just put my stuff in storage, find an apt. near my school, and leave the country for a couple of months. Unfortunately, my lease doesn't end until May 31st, so I convinced myself to just tough it out.

I agree with the first one. My family has always had to worry if we would have another paycheck the next month when I was growing up. Giving up a paying job to be without one is scary. It definitely makes me nervous.

My last day of work is officially June 21st...can't come soon enough. I actually have thought about finishing earlier, but that extra $$$ in the bank is too good to pass up.

My last day is next Wednesday! I'll still be on the payroll for some random tutoring, but other than that, freedom! I'm gonna do a lot of yoga. My goal is astavakrasana (eight angle pose). Sorry, had to share since you guys are always talking about lifts and gains. 😀 in June I'm traveling and then July I'm moving!

Will be working till at least end of May.

Both issues make a lot of sense. If I didn't have my fiance to help me through the summer I would not quit until ~1-2 weeks before schools starts (LDRs suck though and that is a big reason why I am just moving before school, plus the wedding...). I totally get it though I worked every summer of college... and during school. I think that it makes sense for you to wait, perhaps make a budget and see if you could take at least 1-2 weeks off? The other thing is if you like your job. If you are working in something that is not stressful then I can see staying longer as well. Good luck either way and congrats on overcoming the odds!

Done next Friday! Then I'll be in Quebec doing some fishing.

Well, I did it. I quit my job. Feels good man 😀. I've saved up more than enough to last my cheap self until med school payday. And with the scholarship I'll be receiving, I won't be owing $300k @ graduation. Anyone else quit or put in their notice yet?

Hell yeah. Live it up while you can. No reason to work when you can play. Plenty of time working your ass off in the years to come.

I come from a very similar background and the thought of going a month or two without a paycheck terrifies me.

Quit a couple weeks ago. Loving it.

Black ops, game of thrones (books), other books, straightening up my Spanish, going to concerts, traveling.... All that non-trad savings going to work.

I think this is the only one who understands. LOL.

Lol nope I definitely understand as well! I'm only leaving mid June because that's when my position ends. At that point I find it meaningless to find another job.

So, related question, for all of you who know when you plan to quit, how far in advance are you planning to give notice? I'm torn between wanting to give enough notice for them to rehire and me to train (2-3 months) and being afraid that if I give too much notice I'm going to find myself with some extra vacation on my hands. :-\

I'm giving notice next week, 2 months in advance of leaving. But then again, they've known I may be leaving for over a year now. I think a month's notice is courteous enough for them to look for someone without possibly jeopardizing your position with them. But it probably depends on your relationship with them and/or if your position is easily replaceable.

I would call while driving home and let them know I won't be coming in the next day, and that my desk is on fire.

Two weeks is an acceptable amount for not burning bridges.

I work in a research lab and my PI wants me to publish in Nature Immunology before I leave. I was like.."Oh, that sounds...nice," when she told me but I was thinking "LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL ain't NO WAY that goin happen lady." I am thinking about peacing out in early July. I am just so tired of the stress of the lab and want some time to relax before classes start in August.

I wish I could quit my job. I'll be working until July 23rd, school starts August 1st. I have almost exactly one week of freedom before school. Real life sucks sometimes 🙁

Why can't you quit earlier?
