Hi!
I know a lot of schools accept LOR from an MD if you have not shadowed a DO. But the MD LOR that I'm using is for clinical research. Is this an acceptable LOR, or does it need to be someone that I have had shadowing experience with? Thanks for the help in advance!

Did you actually work with this MD on research or just know him? The letter shouldn't be a problem but I think it would look good to have an LOR from a doctor who you have spent some time with in an actual clinical patient care setting, as there really arent DO schools "heavy" on the research. Depending on the schools you applied to it can be MD or DO, although some require a DO.

But it could be good for an additional letter. In addition to my committee letter and DO letter I recently submitted a letter from a brigadier general to further strengthen my file and add more perspective on my character, and he has nothing to do with the medical field! But, he knows me and it looks good to have something like that coming from a well-respected individual. Unfortunately, unlike the other ones, I had to submit it myself, as there is no way I am going to ask him to send a letter to a ton of schools. No way he has that time.

I seconds this, you really need a letter from a physician who has observed you in a clinical setting (rather you have observed him/her).
