What are the career paths for MD+MBA? Why do you take MBA? Any successful stories?

Some people decide to get an MBA because they are interested in opening up a private practice and would like the additional business training. An MBA can also be useful if you're interested in healthcare admin positions or in consulting work. It can also help you break into medtech industries if you're not interested in ultimately becoming a clinician.

Check this paper out:

Interesting paper but the sample is small (~200 MD/MBAs), the sample is limited to Harvard Business School grads, and the sample stretches back to graduates of the class of 1941. If any of those early grads were still "active" in 2016, God bless 'em.

Haha I'll be honest, I did not actually read the paper, so thanks for pointing those things out!

I'll be starting an MBA while in fellowship.
It makes sense for some folks, not for others.
There are a lot of good conversations on this buried in the MD/MBA subforum.

In my opinion, for the great majority, obtaining the MBA during medical school makes less sense than completing it later (i.e. closer to when you will be actually using those skills/network). 4-5+ years later, those things get stale.

Also look at your goals and juxtaposition it against the cost. Determine your odds of achieving your potential ROI. If you like those odds, take the plunge.
