How hard is it to get into and MD/MPH program, compared to a regular MD and MD/PHD programs, respectively?

What type, and how much, experience do you need to have for such programs?

That is to say, do MD/MPH programs look for certain types of activities beyond the regular volunteering/shadowing, such as expereince with health policy, epidemiology, etc?

I'm not sure how much harder or easier it is to get into MD/MPH program versus MD program. Also, it depends on the school whether in order for you to get accepted into MPH program, you have to be accepted to MD program first (like BU), or if there's a specific application for the MD/MPH program (UMD, Tufts).

Still, for this program, I don't think you need to have any special experience with public health, but you should know why you want the MPH degree. FOr the apps, you will usually have to write why you're interested in this degree and what it will bring you in addition to your MD degree. Usually, having experience with research in community/public health is a plus.

When you apply, and how difficult it is to get admitted, depends on the school. At Tulane, for example, you apply for the 4 year MD/MPH program after being admitted for the MD program, and admissions to the MPH is more or less guarenteed. Other schools may be more competitive, or may force you to apply while applying for the MD program, rather than afterwards.
