I have a fellow resident who has a recent burn to get his MD. We have an MD school here but I am curious as to the different specifications of different places about the requirements to get the MD as quickly as possible. I remember people getting MDs after OMFS residency in Shreveport. It sounded like a nice greesed runway. How quick could it be done (including the year of GS)? I know some places the OMFS faculty has a lot more power in the medical school than others.

Usually 2 years of med school and 1 year of hell (GS).

Virginia has this option formally also. Memphis just started this option for their own 4-year residents, but I don't know if anyone has done it yet or if it is open to "outsiders".

If it was me, I would do the Virginia program, because you do the 2nd year of med school during the 1st year. This is a year when you can work as an oral surgeon and make a killing, but show up and take tests every few weeks.

Thomas Jefferson I think...

To mimic others, I believe one would do 2 years of med school (passing USMLE steps 1 and 2 along the way) and then a required 1 year in general surgery (passing USMLE step 3 during or at the end of the year). This would total 7 years including the 4 previous years of OMFS. This is why the 6 year MD integrated programs are more attractive. The 1 year of gen surg is integrated into the program so you save a year. I also don't know if programs outside yours would let others in s/p OMFS to complete med school. I would talk to your med school to see if your resident can do it there.

UIC supposedly has a 1 year option for MD. Also CWRU only do 1 year of MS. Maybe they would entertain MD acceptance especially with their new DMD/MD program. I heard Shreve you can get it in 14-17 mos.
I believe you can buy it online also 😉

See our program used to be a dual degree, but after 3 residents jumped shipped for greener grass on the other side it went back to being a 4 year program. So some sort of relationship already exists with the med school beyond the History and Physical Diagnosis course. There was a major flaw with our program on a 6 year MD track and that was the residents did internal medicine instead of surgery because there was no official general surgery residency program at our hospital.

I know JSB wanted to work something out to bring back the MD, possibly offering it as an MD option after completion of the residency. What's he been saying??

3 residents out of 5? Yikes. That must've been a fun couple of years.

It is called having a !@#$%#!#$ for a program director. Luckily, he isn't the director any more and he is on his medication now.... now you get the gifted surgeon without the mental illness (most of the time at least)....

Does anybody have an update on these programs?
I'm in a 4-yr program, considering going back for the MD in pursuit of a career in craniofacial sx.

and now they have the greener grasses of obamacare

I know this is an old topic, but can anyone shed some light

Ghali at LSU-S has an official program. You need to get 70+ on CBSE then pass USMLE within 3 months of taking the CBSE. It is a 2 year program to complete the MD.

Or you could just be happy with one degree and save yourself the lost years of income....I'm sure that works for the other 99% of OMFS.
