A friend of mine wants to apply MD/PhD and is asking me about the AMCAS essays.. is there a separate essay for MD/PhD? If so, what is the prompt?

I seem to remember being able to skip an MD/PhD essay on an application, but I can't remember if it was AMCAS, TMDSAS, or a secondary application.

If you designate in your school choices that you are applying to one or more schools for MD/PhD, two additional essays will show up. They will not show up if you choose MD-only for all your schools (or MD/other non-PhD degree).

In the field below, please state your reasons for wishing to pursue the combined MD/PhD degree. The available space is 3,000 characters.

Please describe your significant research experiences. In your statement, please specify your research supervisor's name and affiliation, the duration of the experience, the nature of the problem studied, and your contributions to the project. The available space is 10,000 characters.

Edit: This is for AMCAS, don't know about TMDSAS, but you can apply to the texas schools for MD/PhD through AMCAS.

What are the "dynamics" so to speak of applying MD/PhD compared to applying MD-only? Does anyone have a link to some sort of FAQ that would explain the differences between MD/PhD and regular MD admissions? Requirements, how many spots available, etc.
