MD with 3.5 and 22MCAT

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
you can probably get into DO as is, but you need 30+ for a decent shot at MD.

Alright, thanks! I really want a shot at MD and I feel like my life depends on my MCAT now. I guess I should add that Ihave tons of extracurricular.

What do you guys think of Postbac programs? Would it be useful for me? Or should I solely focus on my MCAT?

Honestly, there's no point in discussing anything until you retake the MCAT. A 22 is simply too low, for either MD or DO. From now until your retake, your entire life needs to be MCAT. Getting another low score is going to be a major problem, but getting a good score can resurrect your app. Once we see your new MCAT, then we can talk about whether a post bacc or SMP would help. But in the end, it's all about the MCAT for you.

Best of luck!

Waste of time and money to apply now. Your MCAT is lethally low,a nd your GPAs are below avg.

Work on that MCAT and then try the low-tier MD schools, your state school, and DO programs.

Hi All,

Currently here are my stats,

sGPA: 3.51
cGPA: 3.50
MCAT:22

I am re-taking my MCAT in March, hopefully it will be above a 30, but that is difficult still.

I am wanting to do a Postbacc or SMP this year, however, I am not sure if I should apply to medical school this year or next?

Any advice on Postbacc programs, medical school, or anything in general would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Just apply to Caribbean schools. You're in literally the same boat I was in, it's a waste of time to do Post-Bacc and a waste of money. Apply to one of the big 4 you'll get in.

I'm afraid I won't do well on my MCAT again. This time I have been using EK and TBR.

Pointless to do Postbacc, your GPA is not what's harming your chances right now.

If you get a really good score on your MCAT retake and want MD, then think about Postbacc if you don't get in after an application cycle.

With a 3.5 and a 26+ MCAT, I think you wouldn't have much trouble finding a DO school to attend.

I'm afraid I won't do well on my MCAT again. Last time I used Kaplan but this time I have been using EK and TBR.

I hate to say it, but your MCAT is pretty much making your application a non-starter at this point. As worried as you are about it, if you want anything resembling a reasonable shot at MD/DO then you will require a retake.

How was your score breakdown, are there sections you scored competitively in, and sections you tanked? VR seems to give most people a lot of trouble, maybe you can mostly just focus on that for a retake to get yourself into DO range?

Unfortunately, based on your current MCAT score you will essentially be rejected at all MD schools. Just out of curiosity, why not DO?

Run from this mindset, OP. Run far and fun fast. The waste of money is paying for a Carib MD and then either failing to complete the degree or failing to match in the US.

Terrible advice. Don't listen to this OP. Retake the MCAT and apply broadly.

How about studying for the MCAT and retaking it? Honestly 22 is pretty low even for DO. Your GPA is okay (not good, but okay), so I would say if you can miraculously get that 22 up to a 30 you could have an honest shot at a low/mid tier state school.

To all the "just apply DO people," that is not reasonable advice. Statistically, those stats will not "probably" get you in, so don't advise that.

A 22 MCAT is 2-3 points below the avg test taker and is below the DO accepted average. A 3.5 GPA isn't high enough to compensate for that. OP, you should really study, retake the MCAT, and increase your options and chances to gain an acceptance.

Thread is rather moot since op will be retaking mcat anyway, but I believe there is someone in pre DO with comparable GPA, a "lethally low"/"atrocious" 22 MCAT.....and 4 acceptances. This case is NOT atypical. I have to emphasize though that schools one may get into with these numbers are mostly the NEWER programs, not the established ones. These are the schools this person got into. There is another person with 3.47/3.22/23 and got 5!!!! interviews. Again, not atypical. These people applied smartly. Nevertheless if you are averse to newer programs, a retake would be needed.

I don't care if I'm annoying people, I just hope people with low 20's mcat and mid to high 3.x gpa can see my posts and get more realistic, encouraging advice...instead of being bombarded with "don't waste your money" and "your app will go in the trash" type responses.
