Hi, my name is Chris and I’m 19 years old, graduated high school in 2017.

I’m currently going through Paramedic school through a local hospital & I’m doing very well but I feel as if it’s not enough.

I did poorly in high school because I was unmotivated and didn’t really care. (MAYBE a 2 GPA?). I missed easily 50 days in my senior year.

I turned things around & I’ve been flying through paramedic school with no problems.

I know it’s a big jump but is it still possible for me to become an MD? If so, how can I start?

Note: I live in northern Indiana.

(Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place)

Luckily high school has very little weight in terms of medical school acceptances.

I'd recommend that you first enroll in either a community college or 4-year university and pursue a major of your choice while completing the pre-medical coursework (a list can be found on the AMCAS website.) While pursuing your degree you should be actively involved in clinical and non-clinical volunteering particularly opportunities that involve patient contact and service towards the lesser fortunate. Additionally you will want to shadow some primary care physicians (other specialties are fine, but PCP is generally recommended to cover your bases). Keep in mind that the general timeline is to apply in your junior year and prior to that you should take the MCAT (rule of thumb is three months of dedicated study time.)

If you can’t get into college, start with community college. Where I live, there are connections between CC and schools around. Like if you take these courses in this CC, you’re guaranteed a place in the school.
