I have found MDApps to be an absolutely great tool for me to look at others and see what kind of EC's they have, and things they did that might have helped them in the application process. It has also given me an idea of where people with my kind of profile should apply. I have gotten some good feedback from other applicants because of my profile, and I am baffled that more people on this board don't use it religiously.

Hook 'em Horns.

Yeah, it can also be quite embarrassing 🙁 I had 4 people leave comments saying something along the lines of "Wow, what a waste of money or good luck cause you're really going to need it"! Fu*king haters! I deleted them of course, but it was enough to make me take off the link to my MDapps 🙄

People like that can lick my burnt orange balls. I couldn't care less about stuff like that. As far as I'm concerned, the benefits of it far outweigh any embarassment I might get from a bunch of people who don't know me. And people who say stuff like that probably don't understand the process anyway.

What were numbers by the way:meanie:

That's why MDapps is a bad thing as well. If the majority of it isn't inflated by pre-meds' egos (which I suspect it is to a large extent), then it is still only representative of the very motivated; basically, the type that post on forums neurotically about their chances. 90% of pre-meds I've met don't know s*** about med school. People on SDN are not representative of most pre-meds, which is why if you look at the mdapps for NYMC, for example, the averages are way higher than what the MSAr reports. Don't let mdapps get you down.

:laugh::laugh::laugh: Yeah, I wish I could tell people that, but I'm a girl. 😉

Yeah, I find pre-allo to be a waste of space. Well, there might be a handful of useful threads, but the rest centers around neuroticism and machismo so much that I don't even go there anymore, even though I applied to MD schools as well as DO.
Amen sister. I graze over that forum everyonce in a while, but there are so many more useful threads here and in the Emergency Medicine forums

I've been thinking about setting one up but with my 22 MCAT I'm kind of worried about those negative comments.

I really don't think you need to worry about it. I know when I look at profiles I'm looking for the positive and usually if someone has a low MCAT or GPA I will comment on their ECs....if the profile is really that bad I just don't leave a comment

Yeah, you're right. I need to get a thicker skin anyway. Maybe once the kids go down for a nap I can work on it.

I'm applying to med school with a sub-2.7 GPA. I think that people like us stand to benefit more from it than anyone. How much advice does someone with a 3.8 GPA and 35 MCAT really need? They may not get into Stanford, but someone will take them for sure.

That's true because I could use some good input. I already know I need to retake the MCAT but that won't happen until January. Since you did so well on the MCAT any tips for studying? Of course I'll have to adjust my studying to work around my 2.5 year old and 12 month old. They don't often sit quietly as I try to study.

👍
Part of the reason I applied to a few DO schools is how chill it is over here.
Anyways, you can always be vague with your mdapps page, not that I think my numbers suck. I'll fill in the details at the end of the season for next years crowd.

Can't you have your hubby or other relatives watch them on the weekends while you go and spend a good 5-6 hours at the library?

Can't you have your hubby or other relatives watch them on the weekends while you go and spend a good 5-6 hours at the library?

I can try to start doing that on Sundays once I get through these secondaries and get some other stuff done for my classes. We don't have anyone to watch the kids. We have arranged our schedules, his teaching and work study and our classes, so that when he is gone I'm home with the kids and vice versa. My husband and I are both applying so fitting in all the study time we need without using daycare or babysitters is tough. He got a 28 on the MCAT though so at least now through January he won't be studying to retake. He is taking four classes this semester and I'm only taking three. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hire some college girl to watch the kids while you guys are studying. I knew tons of girls who did this in school.

Damn! Best of luck.

Every school looks for different things. You can have a 42 and a 4.0 if you haven't had significant research/publications, Stanford will not look at you. At my interview at Stanford I had a meeting with someone and he stressed the point, send us your publications, to get in you need more publications. You can have a 30 and get into Stanford. Point is that schools want students who can/will use them their resources to the fullest extent.

TexasTriathlete - with a 2.7, do really well on the mcat, and more importantly get 5 wonderful publications (.. and on the "right" subjects), apply to Stanford... you may have a shot. (Its also VERY important what school you are applying from.).. some of these schools seem strictly numbers, but they aren't. (WashU.. yeah.)

Edit: you did well enough on the MCAT. You've applied broadly enough. Nothing to worry about.

I was just using that as an example. I'm not trying to get into stanford.

As for my story, my MDapps tells the story a little better. I didn't do so hot my first time through college, but I came back and I've got a 3.4 in my second degree, and a 33 MCAT. Overall GPA is still only <2.7 though, because I graduated with a 2.2

I think I will get in somewhere this year.

I think I will get in somewhere this year.

I definitely agree!

I was using Stanford as my example that even highly ranked school are very achievable if you fit the school's type. If an applicant hasn't had any inner city experience some schools simply will not look at them (UCLA-Drew), etc.

Yup ... the whole reason I really checked out DO more than just 'oh yeah, I'll apply to a few of those schools,' is because how cool everyone on the pre osteo boards is (which definitellllly cannot be said for some other areas on the site😉). The way people act here is the way I feel doctors should, and I would love to be a part of that. Ergo .... what started my journey into exploring osteopathic medicine!!

It's true, all these DO students are so helpful and civil, it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. (sarcasm on the warm & fuzzy stuff, not on the helpful and civil stuff)

Hahaha hey just while we are on the subject ... has everyone here seen the famous 'Al Bundy' Mdapplicant page? It basically says like horrible gpa, horrible mcat, accepted to Harvard or Standford or something like that and for EC's it says 'scored three touch downs for Polk High in one game,' or hold the touch down record for Polk High.' It's very funny. If anyone knows about it, post it ... (I'll try and find it too.)

edit: just found the thread with the link ... but the profile was taken down 🙁

after making a profile at MDApp, it seems like most of the accepted applicants i've found don't quite represent the averages given by the school. perhaps its another case of only successful/high numbers creating profiles...but I was just curious. I'm awaiting my DMU decision, and the numbers are scaring me a little. I'm MCAT 27, GPA 3.6 (3.7 from my main undergraduate institution w/ biochem major).

Like you said, MDapps is not representative of the average due to factors like only the successful creating profiles, etc.

DMU is a fine school, but I don't think your numbers will be below their average. Look competitive to me.👍

I know exactly how you feel. I have a 3 y/o and a 2 y/o. My wife is trying to get into nursing school so we have the same time crunch you do. If your like us, we just don't have the extra 50 or 60 bucks to pay that college girl $10 an hour (and thats cheap!). Forget about daycare at nearly $150 per week, per child! (Forget being a doctor, I think I'll just watch kids!)

Anyway, just wanted to let you know your not alone and goodluck!

There is always somewhere to cut costs. Take the bus, ride your bike, or carpool to work. Eat in. Don't smoke. Don't drink. Don't buy cocaine. Whatever you do, there is always a more efficient way to do it.

the only problem with mdapps is that people can write false things...i wouldnt count it as a reliable source of info regarding peoples stats

I'm just talking about people who read my profile and comment on it or send me a message on here. They have been kind of helpful.

Why do such a large number of people on mdapps keep their profile as anonymous? WTF is up with that? Who cares if someone know where you went to school or any of that crap? I just dont get it...

Some people would like to keep their MCAT score / GPA secret and they could be identified easily based upon school and unique activities.

Yep, that's why I did it. I've got a few gunner acquaintances at my old school who I would rather not give the privilege of seeing my every stat....but as for all you strangers, I don't care -- I hope the information I do provide is helpful! I guess it will be more so when I get rejected/invited etc.

I still dont get it.... but whatever. I really just dont care who sees/looks at it. Maybe thats where I'm different from a lot here, I really just dont care about what others think/say. Whatever. Lets all get in this year!!!

I don't care who sees mine, that's for sure. What I'm more concerned about right now is who smells me.

I got some organic, "earthy" deodorant from Whole Foods the other day, and it might as well be body odor scented. I showered less than 4 hours ago, and I already smell like I just worked out, even though I've been sitting indoors all day.

BWahahahahaha@!@!!!! Yeah, my mom had me try some organic crap one time. I sweat like a moose normally, and she said it would help me out. Not quite. I was sweating before I got out of the house. I had to get prescription stuff from my DO doc and it rocks. Not much more sweat at all under my arms where I used to have sweat stains, even in the middle of January walking around outside, unless its quite warm.

Drysol? My sister used to use that. Also...how does a moose sweat? 🙂

Because, let's say I link my mdapps profile in my signature here at SDN. It says X.XX GPA and XX MCAT score, with some unique ECs; volunteering in Chechnya, for example. The school will say "hey, that looks like Meatwad! I wonder what he's really like..."

Then, they go through my post history, and realize I'm a horrible human being (albeit a charming and very handsome one). Then my hard work would be for naught and I'd be packing up my snorkel gear and heading for the Caribbean.

Haha, very interesting situation. I see your point... but I guess I dont really think about it that way. Whatever. Snorkeling isnt that bad by they way.

Oh, and I dont think the stuff was called Drysol. It was just in a white bottle with a little spongy thing on the top under the lid that I dabbed on my armpits before bed and had to wash off in the morning. Super strength anti-perspirant. We actually looked into the surgeries that take out the sweat glands under your arms it was so bad. But luckily this worked.

That's some serious sweat. 😉 Glad it's under control now.

I got into a DO school with a 3.3 gpa in Civil Engineering and a 20 MCAT. I had alot of EC's, 6 years medical experience, and I am a non-traditional student. So don't let the numbers get you down. Find schools that don't look at just numbers, but look at your entire packeage....they are out there.

 That's awesome! Are you in school now? Your profile says pre-medical? 😕 If so, where do you go . . . if you don't mind saying. 😀

Woo hoo!! I did it!! Now I just have to figure out the avatar thing.
