why arent docs and hospitals subjected to online feedback forums, like ebay? wouldnt that be beneficial to competition and creating a better market for healthcare? not sure about any details, just consider the concept. or amazon.com book reviews is also analogous

It may be difficult for many reasons.

The most clear reason is that doctor-patient interactions take place outside the framework of an Internet site (like ebay), so there is less incentive to go to a site to post feedback.

It might lend itself to having feedback only from people that have a gripe about a doc or office, rather than a balanced mix of patients.

Of course interview feedback works on SDN, so there is a possibility it may work. Other thoughts?

Lee,

I had a similar idea about a physician feedback system. I think patients will want to praise their physicians if given the opportunity; however, we do have to worry about negative feedback. It could be off-set by the physician handing out a business card that indicates where the patient can go to place feedback. This is something that can be tested and implemented. Perhaps we can implement something down the road and combine it with other SDN services?

A similar concept is patients blogging on hospital sites: http://www.medrounds.org/blog/2005/07/blogs-are-new-modalities-of-health.html

I knew about these reports. The reports are different than patient feedback. The reports are facts about a physician's past and stats like where they went to school.

As far as I know, there isn't a site that allows rating of physicians by their patients. Do you know of any?

there's another site, www.doctorfeedback.com, but its ugly. dunno if the feedback notion would work, since consumers in the healthcare industry have little incentive to conduct research, as they rarely pay out of pocket for services (like they often do for eyes, i believe, as an exception). there might have to be some kind of national, standardized, perhaps mandatory healthcare feedback entity. dare i say government imposed? just naive speculating, dont mind me im an uninformed premed. maybe one day i can hang with you big dogs and work something out to improve med.

the healthgrades site is nice, but i cant see it being hugely beneficial unless its widely adopted, to the point where docs not participating in it might suffer. something like AMCAS for med school apps. hmm, some seem to cost money. that can get costly over time. poor folks may be disinclined to use it. but obviously the business has to make money--an advertising based model maybe? i dont know. geez, i wish this subforum got more traffic.
