Hello, medical student here considering MDSSP, I understand during medical school MDSSP recipients will be placed in APMC and apparently it is pretty relaxed in that you do not need to attend drill every month and can submit 1380s, but you are still technically on SELRES drilling status. I have heard that if you take out strap during residency then this basically stays largely the same. However, I have also heard that if you do not take out strap the army will place you in a TPU or assign you to some unit where you will be required to attend drill monthly/do all the normal reserve activities. Also this time during residency where you are actively drilling doesn't fulfill your reserve payback time. I wanted to see if anyone can corroborate this or has any direct experience going through residency as someone who did MDSSP but not STRAP? What was your experience like have to do drills on top of your residency duties? Were you deployable during your residency? Should I just wait the several years until after residency to join?
