Measles

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
During Covid, a lot of states came out with laws preventing businesses (and hospitals) from being liable if you caught Covid on their property. Really made the hospital C-suite happy because they could then cohort patients in waiting rooms, semi-private rooms, etc. without fear if someone contracted Covid they would then sue the hospital.

I foresee similar laws happening if measles increases.

FFS, last year 40% of unvaccinated measles cases required hospitalization. The historical average in the US is still 20%. 90% of unvaccinated close contacts of a case will also develop clinical measles. It's contagious for up to 4 days prior to the rash appearing. Are hospitals masking patients in the waiting room? Are staff wearing masks? Do hospitals near areas with low vaccination rates have the capacity to absorb 10-100s of excess hospitalizations during flu season?

But bro, only a small percentage of children die from this… *checks notes* most contagious airborne disease, which coincidentally has an extremely effective vaccine which is also quite safe.

I can’t wait to have the liberty to not wear a mask while my hospital is even more saturated in preventable illness for the liberty.

... Are staff wearing masks? ...

I mean... I am. Most of the nurses and RTs aren't. I get coughed on regularly, usually right in my face by the old respiratory folks. Definitely the cute little bioterrorist munchkins. It seems that as we get sick, any semblance of ability to turn our head and cough or pay attention to what we're doing just goes out the window, especially with healthcare workers around. But why?

Mask with a face shield for me, probably ad naseum, for my career. It's funny/sad seeing the nurses roll their eyes and groan when I let them know their room has RSV and/or flu, and they've been in there with them for the past 20 minutes sans mask.

Masks aren't that bad. Are they? Am I actually the bad guy?

I know you're making a good argument, because you started your post with "Bro".

:claps:

I'm wearing a droplet mask for essentially all patient encounters. Face shield would be too much for me. N95 definitely too much.

Oh I'm talking about the surgical masks with the little plastic piece attached to the top. Glasses keep it away from your face and from fogging. Even some cheap ones with blue blocking film. I had a helmet style face shield that looked like a clear welding helmet for peak covid before we knew. None of that anymore.

I'm gonna start wearing a good old simple level 3 mask because I just don't wanna have some raggedy ass URTI that stops me from hitting the gym or whatever.

Going on vacay in April and gonna mask up for the flight because people are generally gross creatures. I paid a lot of money for this'n and I'm gonna enjoy TF out of it .

Isn't measles THE most effective vaccine? Like this virus was next in line for elimination after we finally got rid of polio?

It's certainly more effective than the flu vaccine we throw a dart at a dartboard of antigens and pray, yeah

Yeah, but now a lot of the public doesn't trust any vaccine due to the government mandating a garbage product (covid "vaccine") for 4 years. Can you believe people are still taking the COVID shot? When's the last time any of us saw a truly sick COVID patient (ARDS, etc)? I'm sure they're out there, but let's be honest, COVID is now literally just an o.g. coronavirus URI. Like any other respiratory virus it can make your 95 year old grandma sick. What a joke.

There’s certainly a trust issue. They knowingly lied about many things surrounding the COVID vaccine and this is what you end up with. I don’t think a vast majority of people should get a COVID vaccine. I think it’s reasonable to ask if the first thing that should happen when a baby comes out of the womb is to get a hepatitis A vaccine. With that said, my kids are up to date with the exception of no COVID vaccines.

Measles is prevalent around the world. millions of cases a year. America rarely has it b/c we get herd immunity but the herd is smaller now esp in certain areas.

Before covid, never worse a masks and rarely even wore gloves unless I am touching something juicy. Seem to get sick a few times during winter and chalked it just to "I work in the ER". I got my flu shot every year.

During Covid, I wore surgical masks like a good boy seeing all pts. Sorry N95 was too hard to wear for the whole shift. Kids wore masks at school like good kids were told. No one got sick during the winter. Yeah, Yeah.... I know surgical masks have no scientific basis but hey, we didn't get sick. Got the covid jab like a good boy and had a booster too.

Post bad covid, I wear masks when I see URI pts and rarely get sick so I am going to continue. Don't wear masks any other time with any other pts. Covid shots wore me out and have not had a booster. Sick of getting told to get shots and stopped getting the flu shot. I am no antivax by all means but I need a break from the gov telling me what to do or promoting the covid booster when it is not necessary. So I am going no shots for a few more years and maybe go back to getting the flu shot.

But Prob just wear masks around pts that seems to have prevented it anyhow.

Telling docs who are antivax should have their license pulled is crazy.

That's what we're doing in NZ (with due process, of course) ... some refuse even to engage with the Medical Council because they're too far out there.
So NZ requires all docs to get Vaxxed including covid booster or are they requiring docs to announce that they believe in Vaxx?

Depends on the vaccine. Stuff for adults? I don't give a damn anymore.

But if you are a doctor who takes care of kids on a regular basis and you discourage parents from getting the routine childhood vaccines, that's a problem.

I believe masks DO have evidence. It’s when you tell a large population to mask hoping it permanently ends viral transmission that you don’t have evidence. But lots of various evidence that masks markedly decrease transmission when properly worn.

Which is why I wear them at work especially during this craptastic flu season, and occasionally in very crowded places during said time (as above, on the way to my vacation)

What LIES did THEY tell? The mRNA vaccines greatly reduced deaths and hospital admissions.

If you get vaccinated you won’t get COVID. That was a lie so then it was if you get vaccinated then you can’t spread it. Also a lie. While I do agree early on it did reduce deaths and admissions in many populations, they lost public trust with being dishonest.

Dr Fauci literally said anything & everything to get people vaccinated without evidence. Vaxx is a good thing but when you sell people the moon, they will start to question everything.

Masks was like a ping pong. Protective, not protective, maybe protective.

  • "The vaccines stop transmission." Fauci initially suggested mRNA vaccines would significantly reduce transmission, framing them as a way to end the pandemic. Early in 2021, he implied vaccinated people wouldn’t spread the virus. Later data showed vaccinated individuals could still transmit SARS-CoV-2, especially with variants like Delta and Omicron, leading critics to call this a false promise.
  • "They’re 95% effective." Fauci heavily promoted the initial Pfizer and Moderna trial results showing 95% efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19. Over time, real-world effectiveness waned, particularly against infection (less so severe disease), and boosters became necessary. Some argue he oversold the vaccines’ lasting power.
  • "Vaccines provide better immunity than natural infection." Fauci repeatedly emphasized vaccination over natural immunity, suggesting it was superior. Studies later showed natural immunity could be robust, sometimes outperforming vaccine-induced immunity against certain variants, fueling claims he downplayed this deliberately.
  • "The vaccines are safe with no serious side effects." Fauci assured the public of the vaccines’ safety based on clinical trials. Post-rollout, rare but serious side effects like myocarditis (especially in young males) and blood clots (linked to other vaccines like J&J) emerged, and he minimized risks.
  • "Herd immunity is achievable with vaccination." Early on, Fauci tied herd immunity to vaccination rates, estimating thresholds like 70-85%. As variants evolved and breakthrough infections rose, he adjusted these figures upward and later admitted herd immunity might not be fully attainable, prompting claims of shifting goalposts.
  • "You won’t get COVID if you’re vaccinated." In interviews, Fauci suggested vaccination would largely prevent infection. Breakthrough cases became common, especially post-Delta, leading critics to say he misled people into thinking vaccination equaled total protection.
  • "Masks won’t be needed after vaccination." Fauci initially supported easing mask mandates for vaccinated people in spring 2021, implying vaccines would end such measures. When mandates returned with Delta, some accused him of backtracking on an overly optimistic claim tied to vaccine efficacy.
  • "The mRNA stays in your arm." Fauci echoed early assurances that mRNA doesn’t travel beyond the injection site, degrading quickly. Studies later found mRNA and spike protein in various tissues, including lymph nodes, for longer than expected, sparking debate over whether he misrepresented the science.
  • "Vaccines were thoroughly tested." Fauci championed the speed of Operation Warp Speed, insisting safety wasn’t compromised. Critics argue the accelerated timeline skipped long-term studies, and rare adverse events only surfaced post-authorization, leading to claims he overstated the testing rigor.
  • "Mandates won’t increase hesitancy." Fauci advocated for vaccine mandates, suggesting they’d push compliance without backlash. He later acknowledged mandates might fuel distrust, and rising hesitancy post-mandate led some to argue he misjudged or misrepresented the psychological fallout.

What a nanny state.

So NZ requires all docs to get Vaxxed including covid booster or are they requiring docs to announce that they believe in Vaxx?
NZ had a national COVID-19 vaccination program aimed at ending the border closures. It was never fully mandated for the general public – although it was mandated in certain fields – but there was an expectation (carrots and sticks) and a public health messaging campaign aimed at getting the population to 95%+ vaccinated. Doctors who spoke out publicly against the seriousness of COVID or publicly provided vaccine misinformation are being sanctioned proportionate to the severity of their public statements. There is no requirement for booster uptake, although there was a fair bit of encouragement for the first boosters, primarily for vulnerable adults.

Call it a nanny state if you like, I call it "fewer dead people".

But, yes, anyone providing potentially dangerous public health advice on any topic can have a complained lodged with the medical council. It's pretty hard to get to the point of a tribunal – you have egregiously exceed the bounds of reasonableness while ignoring the council feedback and advice. Example:
We're talking ... denying viruses even exist, not "I'm concerned about the integrity of the clinical trial reporting from Pfizer."

I'm not sure where the confusion came with masks other than from folks who were intentionally trying to confuse the issue.

N95 protects the wearer, simple surgical masks protect others – within reason.

Will agree there are some very obvious things (where did 2 meters/6 feet come from?) that don't obviously have face validity, but the IFR from WT and alpha is in the ballpark of ~0.5%, so makes a lot of sense to intervene to minimize spread.

Will also agree a big issue was the failure of public health restrictions/interventions to catch up to the state of vaccination/acquired immunity and the viral mutations.

A big issue was the grifter-industrial complex and the collective decision in certain media spaces to box out messages that would detract from their income. People are pretty quiet about the ivermectin/colloidal silver/sunshine enema theories that got as much or more air time as the vaccine denials that are being regurgitated in this post. The vaccine protected really well against OG COVID. In the wind down between OG and Delta, my experience was the COVID deaths were almost exclusively in the unvaccinated population. There's no doubt in my mind that people died because of their decision not to get the COVID vaccine when they first had the chance to do so.

It's also weird that people are flexing about not taking the latest COVID booster as some "I'm sick of the man telling me what to do" when the guidelines are old people and those with moderate-severe immunocompromise should get it. But I guess "I looked at the risks and benefits and didn't see a compelling case for further COVID boosters" doesn't make you sound hard enough. "I only let the government tell me what to do during even years"...

Yes, after the initial wave, particularly delta was unvaccinated and severely immunosuppressed.

What revisionism on display upthread. The initial trial data did show (unbelievably good!) great levels of protection from catching Covid and thus spreading Covid for weeks after getting the vaccine. It was shocking at that time because I’d signed a lot of death certs, lost some friends, and was expecting maybe something like a flu vaccine.

Of course the way Science works is that you keep collecting data and it turns out there’s is both waning immunity (after months not weeks) and, Darwin again, a world wide pandemic virus can mutate to escape targets and delta came and got us.

If you had half a brain you would have understood this from the beginning. Any expectation that this was a vaccine that would immediately irradiate the illness (if uptake as 98%) like say small pox was purely media creation not pushed in the scientific press. It’s still an insanely rapid and successful vaccine. I wish Trump still bragged about his role in it.

I vividly remember when he said this, esp the 1st, I looked at my wife and told her that he is FOS. He completely lost me and any confidence in him when he stated this.

You guys are such sad little losers it’s crazy. Keep sucking on that Foxnews koolaid.

The mortality rate is 0.1%, so definitely aggressive measures, and forced firings for vaccine non-compliance are in order.
There's also encephalitis (~1:500), pan encephalitis (~1:500), pneumonia (~1:20)

doesn't seem like the run of the mill cold.

why parents want to ffck with this is beyond me.

Because they "did their research"!

(Which is rank BS)
I am so over this. I had a patient the other day tell me this and I asked them to show me their Kaplan-Meier curves. They looked at me dumbfounded and asked what that was. I told them that it was a simple way to show how your experimental data compared to the control data and helped you draw conclusions from your research.

Another blank stare.

“Yeah, I just read some stuff on Newsmax and Truth Social.”

I know it's crazy that so many people in the medical profession could think this way. Just mind blowing. We should all be sucking that Pfizer koolaid. Does it taste better?

No thanks

I'll take Sackler kool-aid instead

Controversial in the medical profession, but I do think from an evolutionary standpoint it's worth considering the long game, end point of vaccination strategy in the broadest sense. We don't seem to be able to replicably eradicate disease. Perhaps it's worthwhile if we suppress prevalence to such low levels that rarely present. However, relying on a general population with choice is challenging if not impossible. Maybe it's the best we have for the time being. I think respecting people's skepticism is warranted. With red dye banned, is Kool-Aid still around?

Measles is a non-issue at my location. It's a virus. Yes, very contagious and worse in many ways than many others. If it did become an issue locally, I'd hope that a once in a century pandemic would have taught us a few approaches that work and don't work. Unfortunately it became political and I fear this set of generations learned very little.
