What is a mechanical wave? Just like sound waves or water waves or BOTH?

Do they only transport energy and not mass?

Mechanical waves can be transverse or longitudinal.

Waves only transport energy, there is no net transport of the medium in which they propagate.

I second the post above. The mechanical part is that wave propagation requires physical disturbance of the medium. For sound in air, the air molecules undergo compressions and rarefactions..
