Hello guys,

I'm aiming to apply for the 2017 cycle but notice I will be short on Biochemistry and Genetic course. Would it be possible to apply in the summer if I won't be done with Biochemistry and Genetic until Fall 2017? Thank you for your time!

Yes they only need to be completed before matriculation. Take from one of the admissions pages "These course requirements need not be completed prior to submitting your application but must be fulfilled by the time of matriculation."

Medical schools have differing policies regarding this, so check with the schools you are interested in.

Also, the new MCAT contains biochem. I would encourage you to get biochem out of the way before taking the MCAT, even if it means delaying a year. Taking the MCAT once sucked bad enough, and I can't imagine sitting through it twice.

^ with that said I haven't see one that requires it yet, and I've looked at a lot of schools- I think most at this point "recommend but not require".

Thank you for your quick response. I was under the impression that those courses would make the application more competitive.

If you are talking about requiring these 2 courses, I have run across a few. Off the top of my head:

Requires Biochem:
Ohio State University

Requires Genetics:
University of Oregon
Michigan State's DO school

First off do you mean OHSU which is not UofO? And sorry but that's incorrect; see bold

None of the schools you listed require it prior to application

That may be true, but they aren't required prior to application - so it's up to you whether you want to wait with a strong app assuming you do well, vs applying before they are complete

I apologize, I did mean OHSU. Also, I must have misunderstood your previous reply. I thought you meant the courses were recommended but not required for matriculation (you never mentioned prior to application.) I was merely trying to show some schools do in fact require Biochem and Genetics for matriculation.

It is not the course that makes you more competitive. It is your mastery of the material.
