Med School in 3 years....would you do it?

hey all -
today somebody mentioned that it might be possible in the near future for students to complete med school in 3 years and head straight into residency through a special program, cutting out the fourth year completely. Do do so would require that you do your residency in a program that supported the program, so most likely it would be at the med school you were already at.

If your school offered this, would you be interested?

some schools actually used to do something like this, a 6 year med school/internal medicine program. i dunno, ask me in a few years, but if i knew during 3rd year what i wanted to go into it might be nice to cut to the chase i guess, but i dont know how realistic an expectation that is for me personally.......one dean of admissions on the interview trail referred to 4th year as "the most expensive vacation of your life".

I believe my school offers a 6 year internal medicine program like was posted above. I don't think the question is as much WHERE you want to do your residency, but more a question of WHAT you want to do you residency in. I could be wrong, but I believe the only specialties that will offer this would be internal medicine or primary care.

if you cut out some of the crap from first year, shortened the summer vacation, and the end of fourth year, you could make it 3 years no problem.

McMaster Medical School near Toronto (Canada) is a 3-year program. Can't really say if it's better or worse than the traditional 4-year program.

This is a bit irreleavant but the end result might be the same....I go to a 6 year B.A/M.D program straight out of highschool...im a third year (essentially an MS-1)...its a short route....but we go all year along...no summers..48 weeks long curriculum....get out at 23 tho 😀

Case Western has a accelerated 6-year program for students interested in internal medicine or family medicine. I know the program was functioning a few years ago; not sure if it's still available as an option.

Ross is close to a 3 year program. Our basic sciences occur one after another after another.....

basically I do the basic sciences in about 16 months with a few 2 week breaks in there. Its ragged and throw a lot at you quickly. At times it feels like it would be nice to have a summer break between 2nd a 3rd semesters, but then again Id rather get off this rock as quick as possible.

I dont see a real advantage to it in the United States.

The University of Calgary also offers a 3 year MD program. They have virtually no holidays during the 3 years and any overseas electives take place the summer after first year. I don't think it works out to that many less months of school in all.
