I was reading many of the profiles on mdapplicants and I was astounded by some of the people who had 40+ MCAT scores and 4.0 GPA's and plenty of extra activities including interships and other volunteer work who didn't get into some of the barely top 20 schools. What does it take to get into the best of the schools when you clearly are the best in your class?

remember scores aren't everything. u can have a 4.0 and a 40 and still be like a brick wall when spoken to. so it's the whole concept of a well-rounded person that the adcoms are lookin for. it's not an impossibility. i don't know what stage of the process you're in but just because u see some people not getting into top 20 schools doesn't mean they're not going to get into A med school. gluck.

Yes, speaking as a PGY4 resident at a major midwest university, it is almost impossible to get into med school. But I can tell you that the people you speak of were most likely some really ****ed up dinguses that did not belong in medicine in the first place. So in the end, "best in your class" doesn't mean **** if you don't have a personality to go along with all your great ****ing grades. Good luck, numbnut. 👎

The other thing that might be worth noting, is that USMLE accredited US allopathic medical schools come in 3 flavors... good, better, and best. If you get into even one of them, you're in pretty good shape. From what I can tell, the rank of your school doesn't really matter as much as where you end up doing your reisdency and what your dean's letter reads.

It's hard to get into medical school at all, and there's no formula for consistenly getting into the top ones. Having high grades and MCATS will help, but I'm sure the interview and other intangible become more important as you reach the phase where everyone left in the applicant pool has similar credentials. I uodn't get fixated on the top 20 schools so much. Different schools are better at different things, but it's hard to differentiate a lot of them otherwise in overall quality.

That's not true. It is difficult. Not impossible. The nationwide acceptance rate for all applicants and all seats in MD programs wavers between 35-50% each year. That's a high number. "Impossible" would be if it was 2%!
