FREE Program for Medical Students!
Understanding PM&R: A Medical Student's Guide to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Saturday, October 24: 9 am-Noon
Austin Convention Center, 500 East Cesar Chavez St., Austin, Texas
Medical student interest in PM&R is growing, but exposure to the specialty is still limited. This program has been designed for medical students with an interest in learning more about physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). This session is presented during the AAPM&R Annual Assembly in Austin, Texas.

It is a strategic goal of AAPM&R to reach out to medical students to inform them about the specialty of PM&R. This program will provide medical students with an in-depth look at the specialty and the PM&R residency experience.

After participating in this session, medical students will be able to:
Differentiate a physiatrist from other physicians

Describe typical practice settings and conditions commonly treated by physiatrists

Understand a “day-in-the-life” of four different PM&R physicians

Outline residency, education, salary, and lifestyle considerations

Evaluate whether PM&R is a good personal and professional fit

11:30 am–Noon Q&A

I went this past November on the advice of others to check it out, and I have to say, they did a really good job of explaining what the specialty offers in a concise manner, and the four clinicians there do a great job of representing their branch of the field. I would tell any med student who's interested they should definitely go to this.

This sounds like a terrific idea and opportunity. However, not everyone who is an intended audience member can or would make it out to Texas on a particular date

As a med student I was hand-to-mouth, and couldn't take big risks with high-cost, low-certainty expenditures.

MS4s have already applied by October.

MS3 may be on rotations on-call and have difficulty switching, or maybe they're just overwhelmed by the first trimester of third year.

MS2s &MS1s are often clueless, misinformed or under-informed about their inclinations, aptitudes, goals, priorities & options, and haven't even heard about PM&R, much less be inclined to buy a plane ticket to find out more about a specialty they've never heard of.

Please find a way to videorecord the conference and make this very valuable programing available on a website or even YouTube.

I think that it may even actually increase future attendance (as a networking opportunity for a specialty that would be more of a known-quantity, sounds really cool & interesting, and may be right up their alley), especially if residencies were to start sending reps to a residency fair.

I have sent in the registration form but haven't heard back. I already bought a ticket to Austin so I hope there are no problems.

(I met reps/residents at a residency fair for the chicago AMA meeting a couple of years ago.)

I highly recommend this. 😀

I met drusso in Philly when he presented at the med student meeting. I too would whole heartedly recommend this to any med student interested in PM&R. Just wish I could go this year but I'll be covering the unit so my seniors can go.

It says free.
is that after i pay the cost of the conference or does this mean i get to enjoy a free day and decide if I want to pay for the rest of the conference after.

I am pretty broke at this point.

too late now for this answer but for next year - it is free. no registration. don't need to register for conference to attend the med student event.

i thought it was very well attended and well organized. good speakers but ran out of time early from what i hear.

i am the attending physician who put this year's program together & was one of the speakers. it was very well received & we didn't run out of time. as a matter of fact, i let the program go a few minutes over(intentionally) and a few of us stayed after the program for over a half an hour to talk with the students.

the program was free & any student who attended got to roam around the lecture sessions & exhibit hall that day for free.

sorry about the lack of follow up after some people registered. there was some type of foul up at the academy, but we tried to contact those people to confirm. not sure how successful we were, hope you had faith & didn't no-show.

residents, as well as attendings, presented. the residents & a few of the attendings were available for questions afterwards. all were present for questions during the Q & A panel, as well as a breakout one on one session. i, personally, may have a few of the students shadow me in my office as a result of the contacts we made.

i was very pleased with the turnout, around 50 students, some from as far away as new mexico & boston.

good news! the program will be available for audio podcast, hopefully in the next few weeks. it will be on the aapm&r website: www.aapmr.org.

even better news! all 6 presenters, 5 attendings & a 4th year resident, were interviewed for audio podcast. the interviews focused on our present practice types & the experiences that led us there. hope to have that up in the next month or so, again, on the aapm&r website: www.aapmr.org. should be of benefit to both students & residents.

i have a question: what would the interest level be in a "residency fair"? if it were possible (this is just a hypothetical--i am just looking to guage your interest level!!!) to have representives of pm&r residency programs available at, for instance, next year's annual assembly in seattle in Nov 2010? not sure it can, or will, happen. just theorizing......

what do you all think? would that be a well attended session? i realize that it is a bit late for the fourth years, but that assembly date has been set in stone for years now.

try to let me know what you think.

also, once we have the post-program survey data back from the med student program, i will try to let you know any salient info.

I think a residency fair would be extremely helpful, and something I wish was available when I attended the conference last year. There isn't a lot of information about programs out there, so any additional exposure (outside of rotations/interviews) would be great!

+1 👍

Outside of rotations/interviews and SDN
