Long time lurker, not a frequent poster...

I'm a first year medical student looking to do some research next summer.

Does anyone have any tips on breaking the ice with researchers at schools other than your own? I am a little hesitant to write an unsolicited email to a researcher, research coordinator, or a program assistant. Is it considered rude to do so?

If you have an idea of the type of research you'd like to do, then go to PubMed and click on the "Limits" tab.

Limit by "affiliation" (it's down the page aways) and search by the institution's name + speciality. You'll get a bunch of papers. Look for the authors. Email the guys who's names keep coming up and/or who's projects look interesting. (Thanks to ERMudPhud for this trick) Email should be 2 sentences - who you are + why you're contacting them. Attach a current CV.

Repeat x 20. They may not all reply, but you'll get some hits.
