Media appearances

I was researching other private practice's websites and quite a few of them have extensive media appearances. They were featured in mainstream press such as ABC news and TIME. I am curious about how people get these gigs. Hire a PR firm? Publish a lot?

I was once contacted by someone who said that they'd make me a commercial that would be featured on the local news channel. All I had to do was pay for the production. Reminded me of Saul Goodman Productions LOL

The same goes for a feature in BEST Psychiatrist in PA/USA (or whatever magazines are on the airplanes) magazine spot. I'm an insurance-based private practice, so no need to spend that much on advertising.
