How much do pathologists get paid for being a medical director? I understand there’s a limit to how many hospitals you can be a medical director at?

Yes there is a limit, 5. I was At Limit for long time, which is called "Platinum" status.

Crazy there was a day without limits, like a bygone era of such legendary ballers you have imagine pathologists arriving in actual limos. Im not B.S.ing, I have physically sat down and drank whiskey with pathologists who made several million a year in 1975 dollars! I can barely fathom that now. Its like reading GOT and someone telling you they met the mother of dragons or something...

depends, but usually between 50k and 250k per a year. depends tho on how big, onsite time commitment etc.

for some gig that actually wants you physically there 9-5 AND 24-7 service by phone with a potential for 30 min in person response to a crisis, a TON. for gigs that just want you on retainer, less.

Individually not much, but like I said string those beads together brother!

I concur with these numbers, although I think it can be both less and more. There are plenty of Paths out there who do literally nothing for the lab other than provide their signature on their validation reports and act as a heatsink for liability for the lab. Those guys will work for as low as 20K per year, although sometimes considerably more despite providing almost no value. Sometimes, particularly in Molecular, the director is a formality and actually knows nothing or next to nothing about the testing or subject matter, and relies entirely on the scientific staff. They will usually work for low numbers (like 20-50K), but don't actually provide value beyond the license. These are bad set-ups, IMHO. Think Theranos.

BTW, while the CLIA limit is 5, if one of your labs is NYS accredited the max is only 2.

In terms of the "medical director" role, remember this isn't a CLIA term (Lab director is). So such roles can span from basically lab director with all real responsibilities delegated to others, to basically CMO of a company including sign out. In the latter cases, pay can be more than $500K.

sounds about right.

One thing is separating Part A reimbursement from Medical Directorship pay, I feel this should be done but is not always done. Many med directors do not do this.

I had a reply from Vachette once about this, we get paid a penny compared to what we supervise. What can you do? Hospitals don't want to give it up.
From Vachette about 2 years ago:

Please find below the medical directorship information I was able to pull for southern US clients (NC, SC, FL, GA, AL, MS, TX). Current data is from current up to approx. 3 years ago. Archive data is from approx. 5-7 years ago.
