Wow, I was just reading the pre-med forum. The people there seem so much more cut-throat than the ppl going for dentistry! That's great! Dentistry not only is a better profession but has more laid back and cooler people. I know that there are "gunners" wherever you go but geez, they are INSANE in the pre-med forum..people are so serious!!! damn!

The meds can keep their competitiveness. They are a bunch of crazies that I would term 'gunners'. It's the 'god-like' attention they want, not really to help people or their pain. I like it here where there is a real sense of community and comraderie (sp?).

Dentists rule!

Careful not to get carried away with the stereotyping. There are plenty of compassionate pre-meds, and no shortage of cutthroat dents. 😉

I agree with Bill. A lot of the kids that post on here (especially in the pre-allo forum) are obsessed with the US News rankings and are ultra competitive. However?I know quite a few pre meds who are really laid back people, and actually know a couple of alcoholics who are going to med school next year?. It takes all types I guess.

Alcoholics already? Wow, they must take their professional responsibilities seriously to be getting such an early start. 😀

I don't want to stereotype premeds, either, but a lot of the ones I have met and been in class with are too competitive. I'm very much a capitalist, and I believe that you should work hard in whatever you do. However, I think a lot of the premeds lose sight of the big picture. The person sitting next to you may end up being your colleague or teammate. I don't see how you could harbor feelings like that toward one another for 4 years of undergrad and an additional 4 for med school and then once it's over turn that side of you off. Yes, dental school has its gunners, but after having been around dental students my whole life (one of my parents is a dentist and teaches operative) they are for the most part more compassionate and easier to talk to. More often than not I've met premeds and med students(both in class and when I teach at Kaplan) that are absolutely self centered and arrogant. It turned me off to wanting to pursue medicine.

No offense to you but why are you comparing pre-dents to pre-meds? You started with Dental vs. Medical school admission thread, Dental students are better looking thread, and now medical geek thread.

I did not start the dental vs. medical school admission thread. Scipart did!
The latter two I did start. Why am I comparing? Not so much comparing just a very interesting observation I made when I saw the pre med forum. Just observations I have seen.

Being a former pre-med who has since changed to pre-dental, I agree with many of the points made on this thread (as well as the med vs. dental school admissions thread).

One point that has not been mentioned is that a lot of pre-meds tend to act overly altruistic. They tend to believe that they are being chosen to serve humanity, and nothing must stand in the way of them achieving their destiny. In general, they dismiss any talk of the financial aspects of being a doctor, and claim that they are entering medicine ONLY to "help people"

Unfortunately, this attitude is only exacerbated by the unusual requirements of Med School Adcoms. On my med school interviews, it was mentioned on more than one occasion that simply shadowing a physician was not enough; only by doing excessive volunteer work can one prove that one is capable and ready for the sacrifices of being a physician. This attitude trickles down to pre-med advisors and ultimately to applicants, who then convince themselves that you can only enter medicine if you've been volunteering since high school. And then this fuels the "I am holier than thou" attitude that many pre-meds have. It is a vicious cycle.

Overall, I find dentists and the pre-dental community to be a lot more laid back and more practical than pre-meds. When people on this board post about the financial benefits of going to perio or ortho, no one jumps on the poster about being "in it for the money." Everyone on this board has a legitimate interest in working with people and contributing to their patients' oral health, but not to the point where we feel that we've been chosen by God to become a dentist...

Just my $.02 on this subject.

I somewhat agree with ncalcate' comments. I think that pre-meds' competitiveness and obsession also have a lot to do with rankings, such as The U.S. World News Report. Ranking makes students want a high status from college and other aspects in their lives. Because of this hierarchy, students tend to judge things by number, such that a GPA of 4.0 is better than 3.0, Harvard students are better than Podunk State University students, and people with more money and reputation are better than those without. Thus, students tend to draw a line between good and bad without much understanding. They begin to think that people can be attached to one number, and, from that number, they make assumptions about people??s character. The problems is that complexity of a person cannot be explained in black and white terms like rankings, grades and list of accomplishments.

I say we go over there to their message board and kick their pompous pre med asses.

There are dental students like this as well, in fact, the only profession devoid of these (competitive) people is Mall Security.

Dude, you're totally ignoring the Gary Coleman factor here.

Completely agree with the above. Once again, what's with the obsession w/ comparing dds and mds? How many threads or polls do u think they put up comparing themselves to us....probably none. Just fueling the perceptive separation b/w meds and dentals, which i think is mostly in the heads of dental students.

nice, at least you're an honest A-hole.

Truley I have never meet such a large group of people who are stuck on themselves and what others think of their profession.

Anamod:

Are you referring to the pre-meds, pre-dents, or both?

One minute their talking trash about you to another classmate and the next minute their kissing your ass to get last years exam to study. I just look around at my classmates and a great deal of them have one thing on their mind, and that is themselves and what they need to get done.

Sometimes I reflect on the fact that Med School Interviews look much tougher than the ones I've had to go through, based on the rigor of the questions and expectations of applicants knowledge (look at the Interview Feedback pages on SDN). It makes me feel like I have it easy as a predent.

But look at it this way, in the name of inclusivity for all careers:
1) a job is a job is a job.
2) anything is better than being jobless. who cares about anything else? Anything is good work these days.

....
can't avoid a potshot:

3) Just think of what kind of car you'll be driving and potential standard of living you'll be enjoying 3 years out of professional school compared to your fellow med students.
