Which are the strongest medical informatics programs? I've got a background in library science, journalism and want to apply to programs that focus on content. Would be interested in hearing from those currently in one. Thanks.

The University of Pittsburg has an extensive program.

What does an MD with training in informatics do on a typical job? Work at a hospital on designing software or networking computers?

Informatics is still a new and openning field. Are talking about getting training while in Med School or after or apart from Med School?

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has a program as does UC Davis. UC Irvine also has one, but they are not necessary closely or integrally related with the med schools.

There is a fellowship in radiology that combines medical informatics with body imaging. There are several programs: Northwestern (chicago, IL), U Pitt, U Maryland, USCF, and combined Harvard program. These programs are all 1 year fellowships after 5 years of radiology. The harvard program is about 3 years I believe. I know of a neurologist (4 years neurology residency + 3 years informatics), who did this training at harvard and is now head of IT stuff at a medical school.
