Since most everybody here is going into medicine, who are some solid role models that people can read about or look to for inspiration, etc? You know, people like Albert Schweitzer or Victor Frankl....

What about Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon?
And then Samuel Shem, the author of House of God & Mount Misery.

Bill Cosby maybe? 😛

How about Rosalind Franklin? I think she's far more important than say Watson/Crick.

Dr. Phil

PSYCH (take that literally and metaphorically, if you will) 😉

Mother Theresa wasn't a doc, but she had the right heart.

Doogie Houser and the cast of ER and Scrubs

My best role models are the ones I have allready met through research and volunteering.

Paul Farmer

Read Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder if you don't know about Dr. Farmer....great book!

what about ur fellow peers. While there are outstanding drs that I admire, I've several friends finishin med schl and starting residency whose accomplishments never cease to amaze. Whats inspiring is that since tehse are people i know, it makes it more realistic for me to be able to even accomplish what they've done.
There's a friend of mine whose accolades and awards in med schl/volunteer work/research and now residency is something I highly respect and admire! 👍

Dr. Applebaum pioneered emergency medicine In Israel.
He was murdered along with his daughter when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a caf'e in Jerusalem.
His daughter was supposed to marry the following day.

Dr. Christian Troy from Nip/Tuck... if you've seen the show you kno what I'm talkin about. 😎

One of my rolemodels - Shusruta.....the father of Indian medicine (as in from the country India). Wrote down operating procedures for plastic surgery (including rhinoplasty), ophthalmology (ejection of cataracts), dental surgery and many others CENTURIES ago......earliest documented evidence being shown around 800 BC.

Representing for Indian premeds 🙂

If that's your idea of inspiring, I think you must be looking for a different website... try circlejerks.net.

Inspiring docs: Ben Carson definitely... and Danielle Ofri from Bellevue Hospital. Can read there books "Gifted Hands" and "Singular Intimacies" (respectively)

Other than that... you should not limit yourself by searching inspirations from medical community only... A lot of very, very interesting people from all industries have become role models for generations of people... Andrew Carnegie, Lee Yacocca, Condolezza Rice to name a few... all have books written about them... great people to look up to and admire! 🙂
Advising you to follow up on them!

One of my non-medical favorites is Sir Thomas More... he got his head chopped off! What a stud.

Personally, sign me up for Dr. John Becker. Love his bedside manner. My hero Secd...Cox has to be way up there.

How about Patch Adams...he spoke at our school, he really is a cool guy. I can't believe he wasn't on the list!

I agree with Patch Adams and Ben Carson.

I have to second this.. I'm actually surprised that more people didn't name him. I'm almost done with Mountains Beyond Mountains right now (AMAZING) and have read Paul Farmer's latest book, Pathologies of Power. After this, I'm definitely going to read his "AIDS and Accusation" and the "Uses of Haiti." The guy's a genius with an enormous heart. If I can be even half as good as Farmer, I'll be satisfied.
