I have to do a 30 minute presentation on medical school to a group of 6th graders. Has anyone ever done anything like this? It would be awesome if there is a generic ppt floating around somewhere I could use. Any resources guys?

Is this required by your school? Seems kind of strange.

In any case, holding their attention for 30 minutes is going to be kind of rough. It might be wise to keep it to 15-20 and use some fun graphics and maybe include an interactive component (trivia?) to keep the students engaged.

Good luck!

Just open with this and they'll love it:

I bet it's cheaper to get a real person than to do all that software and mannequin
I was just thinking that, and still being that expensive it is probably still totally unrealistic. I hope some mood music is playing, it looks like that guy is really getting into it. So much dedication.

OP, just slap some slides together. You've been in higher education for a ton of time, surely you have BS'ed a presentation or twenty by now.
slide 1: "how to become a doctor" as a title. Insert large stock photo of a guy in white coat thumbs upping.

Slide 2: Doctors help people. There are many types of doctors. Insert pictures of doctors doing different things.
slide 3: how do I become a doctor? Do well in high school.
S4: do well in college.
S5: pass medical school, take some exams
S6: do residency
S7: become a doctor, actually make money, see patients, do call

Throw in some other BS slides, ask if anyone is still awake, peace out

Maybe you can ask their teacher what science things they most recently learned, and if possible incorporate that into some cool medical stuff they may find interesting. It might show them some cool applications of what they're learning. And if it's stuff they just learned, they'll probably understand the presentation better and be able to pay attention throughout.

Also, +1 to the posts saying to shorten it...you could do a 15 minute presentation and leave the rest of the time for students to ask questions and such.

-2 cents from someone who has never presented to 6th graders. (Unless you count the book report I did back in the 6th grade lol)

The powerpoint you have should only be pictures...don't have any dumb bullet points or anything that only serve as an outline for you.

Agreed. I would never talk to my kids peers about going to graduate school...I'd talk about doing Science.

What the **** is a "30 minute presentation on medical school"? On what about medical school? Why would someone give a lecture about medical school to 6th graders, rather than medicine?

thanks for all the advice and solid humor. it's great to know you can count on sdn to approximate the maturity level of a 6th grade classroom -- ha ha! anyways, if anyone is looking in the future i found this to be a good resource: http://www.amsa.org/AMSA/Homepage/About/Committees/REACH/TEACH.aspx

i agree that 30 minutes is too long for a presentation to 6th graders. i should have said that the entire time slotted is 30 minutes, so i guess i'll lean heavily on Q&A. wish me luck!

Me as a 6th grader: "You have to stay in school for HOW LONG???"
