If you wanted to get into a top peds residency which school would you go to- Cleveland Clinic or Vanderbilt? I'm really torn...

it will make absolutely NO difference...they are both great places. Do well on the boards and your rotations...do some peds research...you will do just great 😉

When you are ranked by a residency program prior to the Match, a factor used is medical school attended (usually based on US News rankings) so it does make a difference, perhaps maybe not in this specific case.(?) I would not want someone to read this thread and draw the erroneous conclusion that the name of your medical school does not matter. I will say that board scores, grades, letters, and research experience will weigh much more heavily.

I'd agree with the above post. I don't go to a medical school considered anywhere near the top 25 and I've gotten interviews at nearly everywhere I applied to including Boston, UCSF, Hopkins. My fellow classmates have interviewed at great places too.

However, that being said one of my former classmates (an MD/PhD no less) had applied to a top surgery program and didn't get an interview at first. He later called and was offered an interview upon reconsideration of his application, and discovered later somehow that his app had not been considered at first due to his no-name medical school. Happily, he interviewed great and matched there and our school matched another student there the following year.

That one freak story however aside, I would agree that grades, letters, board scores and research are far more important than name of medical school.

I'd read that some residency programs don't like schools that don't give grades (pure pass/fail), and that was the main reason I was concerned about Cleveland Clinic...
