Hey all, long time user, very few post however. From time to time I see a thread which asks what specialty everyone is interested in. I too have been pondering this as I wait to matriculate.

Like most of us, I have some idea of the areas of medicine that strike me the most. However, I began to consider if my mentality and personality would be a more important thing to consider as to the best match for me. Different specialties are better suited to ceratain types of people over others. So I did a search to see if there was any type of apptitude test for this.

I found a site that offered a free online medical specialty aptitude test. Turns out, according to the results, that my personality better suits me for Radiology, Rad oncology and ER. I was interested in Surgery! Try it and take it for what it is, I wouldn't take it as the end all be all, but it is fun and may lend some insight!

Here it is: http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/

Have fun!

This is after cutting away the junk I would never do.

I've taken this test before and if you have a preconceived idea of what you THINK you would like to do, you can easily manipulate your answers to get that result.

I've gotten EM as my top choice every time I take it because subconsciously I answer based on what I think would fit ito that specialty.

Another thing...JKDMed: How can Peds and FP be so far apart on the scores? Doesnt make sense! 🙂

Pediatrics was last, which is actually what I am kind of interested in, but I'd like to do a subspecialtiy in pediatrics.

yeah JP, you could do that and gear your responses to what you want, obviously this is not a definitive test, but it is fun and interesting. I took it a couple of times and tried to be as honest as I could, result varied slightly, but generally there were serveral specialties that always came up in the top ten for me.

That was a very good site. I like how it re-asks questions just to average out responses for accuracy. Thanks for sharing that!

Pathology was #2 for me. Apparently I don't like people or something.

Mine looked like this. Funny thing is Peds and OB are my least favorite fields. Derm is first on my list followed by General Internal Medicine and Family Practice.

4 radiation oncology 44
5 med oncology 44

7 nephrology 43

I was thinking about cardiology, actually, peds was not something that I would consider myself a good match. Oncology was a field that I definately did think I would go in to. Oh well. This was an interesting survey. Thanks for the post.

hello all these are my top 4:

1 occupational med 47
2 pediatrics 44
3 rheumatology 44
4 physical med & rehabilitation 43

Question: What is occupational med? As far as how this test fits my future profession, I believe it's totally accurate. I am very interested in primary care, specially Pediatrics because of the impact one can make in a child's life not only through health care, but also as a guide and mentor....cool survey!

So what is occupational med? 😕

i could see myself doing plastics, and FP and IM really don't do much, so the general idea seems to be good.

This is by far the dumbest survey I've ever taken... I believe the "Pepsi Challenge" is more scientific and logical.
