Are there any medical students out there gearing up for a summer program to continue padding that resume? (Most are probably first year, as summers don't exist after your first year)

What programs are you applying to?
And have you heard back?
Who has done a summer research program and regrets using your last summer ever to do so?
Anyone go to a school with a super competitive summer program?

I'm waiting to hear back from 3 programs. And the waiting game is awful. :scared:

There seems to be so many options for the summer, but alot of specialties really want to see a committment to research ... especially if you plan on doing residency at a "research school."

Did the mskcc program last summer. Wish I'd sat on my ass last summer.

Edit

Made decent coin though so I guess that was ok.

i think i'll take the summer off this year and work on my suffering artwork...and volunteer a little
and get back in shape

it's gonna be a good one!

I did a summer research + clinical experience program last year and have 0 regrets. I would not have had the money to do anything cool with my summer anyway - at least with the stipend I was able to enjoy my weekends/evenings. Learned a lot, too. While doing nothing during the summer would have been nice, I'm very pleased that I don't have to scramble to fit in research work amidst 2nd year classes or rotations.

I'm applying to mskcc. Was the research just not worth it? Like you didn't get a paper out of it/worked too hard over a "summer"?

For the non-regretters, are you going into specialties considered to be competitive research-heavy fields?

Not really. My interest is psych, but I have a strong desire to get into a residency on the west coast, so I am definitely trying to be more competitive than the average psych applicant. It helped that my research was in neuroscience, which gave me a much better understanding of how the brain works than what I learned in preclinical neuro. I think that overall this understanding will benefit me in the future.

I applied to FAER only because I'm interested in anesthesia. Should hear back in a couple of weeks.

The program was full of nitwits who expected publications after 8 weeks of work. MSKCC is badass, but the whack priorities of their GME office were as follows:

1) Facebook
2) Farmville
3) Diversity
4) Feelings
5) Facebook
6) Dress code
7) Clinical research
1000) Bench research

As each of my "patients" had whiskers, fur, and a tail, it made perfect sense to make learning how to operate the human patient database system mandatory. I also appreciated that I (officially) gained access to the mouse room on the second to last day of the program.

Haha! I put it out of my head until last weekend. But this week has been incessant e-mail checking.

Well, news just came out. Not for me this year.

Oh sorry. Well I still don't have an email from them. I called and they only said results are coming out today so I should keep checking my email.
