I'm considering taking a medical terminology course next semester. Has anyone here found this class to be helpful?

Yeah, I'd say it was useful. I took a med term class and it helped out when I worked at the hospital. I was able to understand/figure out things that I otherwise might not have had a clue about. You learn the the meanings of all the roots, prefixes and suffixes which will help you figure out the meaning of seemingly complex medical terminology rather easily. So I say take, it's not a hard class, and it will definitely be applicable for your future medical endeavors. Oh, and be sure to pay extra attention when it comes time to learn about medical shorthand and abbreviations, very valuable stuff.

It sure doesn't hurt 😀 I've noticed the med. term. class I took makes it really much easier to get through reading in a quicker manner. I don't have to stop and figure out what exactly is being described nearly as much as I used to. Enjoy!

This may have already been posted, and if so, I'm sorry in advance. But...does Medical Terminology count in your BCPM GPA? The course that I took had a BIO prefix, and frankly, I'm not sure whether to classify it as BCPM or not? Thanks so much!

what department does your school have it listed under? ie. what is the course number? I listed anything cross listed in the biology or chemistry department or that my school counted as "biology" in my bcpm

It's taught through the Biology Department with a BIO 2000 course number.

Sounds legit to me. My school had a list of courses that counted in the bcmp that weren't necessarily in those departments so it was pretty much assumed anything already listed as bcmp was a go...

AMCAS didn't change any of my course designations but if you're worried just call and ask. The worst that could happen is you put it down as biology and they change it...

Hi Y'all!
I am signed up to take Medical Terminology this spring and I was wondering the following things:

Does anyone have the Textbook the Language of Medicine by Chabner 8th Ed for sale? I saw it on Amazon Marketrplace used for $20 in acceptable condition. Rather buy it from SDNer and in better condition.

Is this a book worthy of keeping around after the semester? Do med students reference it or by then do you just know it all?

Is the online access worthwhile getting or does the CD contain it all?

Does the edition matter? Should I wait for the first day of class and find it if the edition matters or just buy it now for a steal at $20 (including shipping)? I saw the 7th edition for sale on ebay for $10 (including shipping)

Did anyone buy a medical dictionary to go along with the class? What medical dictionaries do you recommend getting? I would like to buy what is used in Med school.

Do med students ever look in medical dictionaries or do you just google everything?

Any general advice for the class? I already took A and P and I am always interested in the etymology of words so I am looking forward to the class.

Thanks!

Good luck to all!

My Update and Answers to my own questions:

I am taking Medical Terminology now. It is fun! I agree with the previous posters.

It is reviewing Anatomy and Physiology in a summary like way and teaching me "The Language of Medicine." The teacher doesn't make a big deal of it, but half of each chapter in the book talks about disease processes. Besides A and P and Nutrition, I don't know where else to see this sort of thing in undergrad.

I ended up buying the 7th edition off of ebay for $19, including shipping. She is teaching the 8th edition in class. The 8th ed looks much prettier, but has the same content pretty much. The 9th ed is coming out soon.

Since my book will have such little resale value, I plan on keeping it. I still haven't bought a medical dictionary becuase I don't know which one to get. I don't need it for the class. Since I have horrible handwriting, I did buy off of Amazon Mosby's Medical Terminology Flashcards. They are beautiful. 800 cards that I don't have to make myself. Here is my post on my blog about it. http://dealfindere.blogspot.com/2010/02/medical-terminology-flash-cards.html

We don't need the online access for my class. My teacher makes us print out a report that we did the exercises on the cd as our "homework".

Any Med students with feedback?

Overall, the class is EASY. Why? Because I am taking it at a community college, and I have already taken Anatomy and Physiology. I think this class would really be challenging if I hadn't taken A and P first. I am still learning tons. I highly recommend this class for those looking for an easier class the last semester before Med school because it is helping me get in the medical world mind set. I can see the utility of learning these roots, suffixes, and prefixes ahead of time. Pretty much the class is medically useful Latin and Greek. Take this class instead of Latin as prep. Then, take Spanish as your Foreign Language if you live in southern border states.

Good luck!

I'm not sure why you need to take a class that you can learn through browsing Wikipedia.

I took bilingual Medical Terminology (Eng/Spn) and rocked it despite looking like a Vietcong.

On second thought: Take it to pad your GPA! BEST IDEA EVER!
