Hi everyone! This might be pretty late in the game, given that my spring break is in a little more than a month, but I was hoping to participate in some medical volunteer work over spring break. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds or the parental approval to go volunteer in another country, and given the fact that I would like to go into rural medicine anyways, I want to find some kind of program that would allow me to volunteer close to home, in areas which are underserved. I live in North Carolina and have been looking around the internet for a few weeks and have also asked my pre-health advisor and can't find any such program. I was wondering if anyone knows of an alternative spring break program that includes medical volunteering in the North Carolina/Virginia/South Carolina/Tennessee area? Any help, even for plans for next year, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't have any specific recommendations for medical volunteer programs (sorry!).

I just wanted to say that I think you should also consider non-medical volunteer trips related to rural poverty. I think a non-medical trip could provide additional insights into the general socioeconomic hardships faced by people living in low-income rural areas. This could be very helpful in contextualizing health discrepancies you see or learn about later on. Just something to think about in case you can't find a medical trip!
