Medicine vs Dental

I just don't know what I want to do anymore. I love ob (not so much gyn), surgery, and endocrinology, but I also love orthodontics.

I think I have more interests in med, but the I think I love orthodontics than the just interest like I have in med.


UGHFDJFK I don't know.
Any pros and cons or anything, advice, is helpful.

Idk, isn't Orthodontics pretty competitive to place in after Dental School? I guess it comes down to what you want out of your life. If you really think you have that strong of an interest in Ortho, you should go the dental route. You could always shadow both and see which you prefer most?

Yes, it is one of the most competitive dental residencies, if not the most competitive.
I have shadowed gen. surgery, ER, endocrinology, and orthodontics, all the ones I mentioned besides OB. I just really don't know which ones I would enjoy the most, though, and I know after a while, a lot of doctors end up hating the field they choose... so uhhgh. I guess it really isn't that important right now, but if I could figure out med vs dental, I could focus my volunteering on hospitals/dental clinics.

No reason behind this besides the fact the dentists look in mouths (many of them nasty) all day. Medicine >

also iirc denists had the highest suicide rate? idk..

I'd look around your first year of college because you won't be taking specific classes just yet. Shadow some ortho people and see for yourself! It really depends on what you want

that's the real answer. only you can decide really what you'd like to do. shadowing will give you a better look at both professions and which aspects of each(and which overall) you like more.

Well, you certainly have time to figure out which option you would prefer. When you get to college, work in a couple hours of dental/medical volunteering a week and see what you think of each. Also, talk to as many people in each of these fields as you can. Both young and old dentists/physicians who won't hold back on the realities of each field.

I should also point out that it is probably a bad idea to go to dental school if you aren't okay with ending up as a GP. Kind of like going to medical school with a "derm or bust" mentality.

Either way, good luck. Try not to worry too much about picking a career so soon and just have a good time in college.

Exactly. It is great that you have so many choices...you like OB like my sister...you like orthodontics like my sister...but in terms of decision, just gave yourself some time. Don't hurry yourself.

Just look at your goals and think about what would make you the happiest in the end when you have to look back at your life.

Don't live life with any regrets and you'll find your true passions!

That's how I found out what I wanted to do.

I don't think anyone one here can tell you which profession to choose. I can't tell you how many times I've changed my mind. It just takes some self time, and experience in each profession. Don't try to force yourself to enjoy something either, If you're having any doubts about anything, trust your gut.

Physicians have a higher suicide rate than dentists. But this is quite irrelevant to OP's question. To OP, if you go to dental school you should be happy being a GP if ortho doesn't work out. Medical school is sort of the same with fam med/ IM, but there are more specialty options as well. Think about what you want in your career and life outside of your career, keep this is mind when shadowing. Cheers!

I wouldn't make a complete decision yet. Dentistry is growing rapidly with the use of laser technology(pain free). I've kept that door open. Follow what you feel interests you the most but examine other fields and you may surprise yourself.

Also, think about it- what draws you to the field? The energy, the procedures? General dentists do procedures too, and they have the flexibility to refer cases on a case-by-case basis based on how comfortable they are.

Where do you want to work? You could own your own office, or work in a hospital. If you're set into the oral cavity and you're fascinated by hardcore surgery, you may want to consider OMFS. But, keep in mind, it's a very competitive specialty- I believe even more so than Ortho.

Shadow general dentists, get a feel for it.

To be honest the bolded really hit me. I had to take a double take.

I never even really gave too much thought about giving a good priority to life outside my future career.

Besides the obvious being family and potential children, how do you see your life playing outside your career?

I mean, no one will know how much time that you will need to keep yourself sane.

But do what makes you happy. Some people find out that medicine isn't it. It's a matter of looking around and keeping both your mind and your options open.

Work/life balance is something that scares the bejeebus out of me too.

I'm debating shadowing my dentist myself. The hours seem too good to be true and I love working with my hands. 😀
