I am new to this forum. Hello to everyone here. I'm applying 2005 cycle and am going to talk with a Dean at one of my choice schools this Tuesday. What do I wear? What , if any, paperwork should I take with me? Also, any suggestions as to what questions I should ask? It?s not an interview, but I want to make a good impression. Thanks

Since this is not an interview, you can dress in casual business attire (everything except a tie and suit). Read up on what programs they have (community and academic wise) and make up questions regarding those so that the Dean can explain to you in further detail. That way, the dean will be impress that you have done some research and is fairly familiar with their program(s). Also, just go over how you've became interest in dentistry because he might pop this question by you for his interest!

Enjoy your visit!

Thanks for the info. Anyone else out there have suggestions, including what I should take with me? Transcripts, DAT, etc... Got a PM saying I should always wear a suit whenever I meet with a Dean. Anyone else been on a visit and have input for me?

I don't recommend going in shorts 😀
Just get your best suit leave always a good impression. You want to sell yourself so do the best out of it!
Hope that helps

You've gotta dress to impress! Anywhere you go, whether it's an interview or just meeting the dean. Wear a suit. Don't forget to bring a list of questions that you want to ask him or her, bring an unoffical transcript, and just be prepared to answer the question "Why you want to be a dentist?"

Good Luck

Well, I guess I don't know off the bat whether you're male of female, hope4dent. If you're a guy, I'd definitely say wear a suit. If you're a gal, I think you can make a good impression wearing something classy but not necessarily a suit: there are just more clothing options for women out there, some of which I'd think would be very appropriate, but what do I know. 😀

I've gone to meet with deans and stuff (and am still making more appointments! (I'm applying in 2005 cycle as well)) and I prepared in the following ways, most of which will just come naturally because of your interest in the schools and the field:

- Spend lots of time on their website. Poke around every nook and cranny. Look for student web pages.
- Find out whether the dean is a DDS, PhD, or both. Gives you possible conversation topics (like PhD: research and DDS: practice) and makes sure you don't embarrass yourself by referring to the wrong kind of thing.
- You could ask about:
the curriculum
the clinics where you'll be practicing
workspaces (community/open vs. personal/cubicles)
rotations through difft clinics (emergency, pedo, etc.)
how soon students get some clinical exposure
given your background, what you can do to be a very competitive applicant

Be enthusiastic. Be grateful. Most of all, be YOURSELF.

I'd also be ready for some grilling questions, which may not be likely to come up, but if you don't think about what your answers would be then they'll ask (like taking an umbrella to work to ensure it won't rain, or lighting up a cigarette at the bus stop to ensure the bus comes in 30 seconds so you have to put it out). To learn what these kinds of questions are, I've found a great resource is SDN's own "Interview Feedback" section for dental schools. Learn from the experience of others!
Here's the link.

Best of luck!!

Male or female it never hurts to wear something sexy. (BTW I agree with all the above posters, suits are the only way to go)

Thanks everyone! I will take your advice about the suit. I am also going to review student feedback from interviews (just in case). I am also going to attempt to add to the above list of questions I should ask! I am going to bring my transcript.

Yeah, bring your transcript too. I forgot to mention that above. Bring ANY paperwork you think might be relevant. I brought a ton of paperwork, a little bit of it ended up being directly useful, and the rest of the thick folder just ended up making me look more with-it and organized (bring it in a classy folder too, no $0.01 shredded manila folders). 🙂

hope4dent,

I had this identical question when I went and met with the Dean of Admissions at UT Memphis. Here is a thread I started on this exact topic:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=116419

One thing I noticed in this thread is that everyone recommends to wear a suit. I would definatly DISAGREE with that. I would have felt very out of place and uncomfortable if I had worn a suit. I think a better way to make a good impression is to be prepared for your meeting with intelligent questions. I did bring a list of questions and the Dean seemed to like that. I also brought my transcripts, resume, etc, but none of that was ever needed. Another thing that was suggested to me was to ask the dean if you could spend a day in the clinic shadowing a 3rd or 4th year student, I would recommend that if you have the time. I also got a tour that lasted over an hour and it also gave me the chance to casually interact with many students.

hope4dent,

Do not forget to send a thank you of some sort. I met with a dean earlier this month and I sent him a thank you letter, not a note. I felt that a note would not be "professional" enough. They like to see you prepared with a list of questions. View that other thread, there is some good info in there....i.e. the list of questions to ask. Good luck!!
