meharry and howard

From what I remember of the ADEA guidebook to dental schools, the student breakdown of Howard was almost 30% Asian - please correct me if anyone has the guidebook handy. When I interviewed there (and was interviewed by two white people - a current student and an alum), I met an asian guy who was from my same undergrad, and we both got accepted.

I really liked Howard, and thought it was a great school (minus the neighborhood, but Columbia - and many dental schools - are in crappy neighborhoods). The faculty were great and they had nice facilities - all of the students I talked to loved it there.

whats the best chance for a nondisadvantaged asain to getting into dental school: howard or meharry?

Thanks a lot. And by the way, you can be Asian and be underrepresented... if you're Malaysian or Cambodian or what ever.. but for us chinese/indian/korean's.. we're outta luck.

Why would you want to apply to a dental school that is the poster child for lowered expectations....?

did a summer program there, pretty familiar with campus, etc. and dental school is dental school

we can establish that the majority of students are black, correct?

if there was an Asian school or a white dental school, undoubtedly it would be called discrimination.

If you are Asian, you do well and work hard...well too bad! there are too many of you smart Asians, so you are going to be at a disadvantage for acceptance.

this systems puts many people like myself in the crapper.

what a novel idea that nobody has ever thought about before.

Based on the chart I would NOT apply to Meharry if you are asian. out of the 51 ppl admitted 48 were African American. That only leaves 3 spots for everyone else. I would apply to Howard though. Based on that chart its much more realistic for an Asian to get admitted

so if someone was chinese asain, they should not apply to howard or meharry? what schools accept a lot of chinese asains?

to be it, in esssence, what if im taking few years off and am doing a masters unrelated to dentistry like computer engineering. do we still add that onto the aadsas app or wait for interview to bring that up?

dont know about where chinese asians have the best shot, but Asians in general have a better shot with howard then meharry. Personally, I am applying to Howard (but make sure u have the prereqs -they want 6 hrs of anatomy which i feel a lot of other schools only have 3 or 4).

Definitely add on your aadsas app that you did computer engineering, it makes you different which is a good thing.

i do not have the 6 hours of anatomy/physi so i cant apply to howard. i can apply to meharry, hope i be that one chinese asain that get accepted their.

i mean i am going to start masters in computer engineering next semester but i want dental admission for fall 2010. do i still need to put down this masters on aadsas or just bring it up in interview when they ask me what im doing this gap year. i have bachelors in computer engineering already with 3.1 gpa

I didn't take anatomy, and almost all of my pre-reqs were from a CC, which Howard "says" they don't take, but I still got accepted - they're willing to bend a bit.

One thing I leanred this week is that few schools may want you to "finish" your masters before starting dental school. Is your program 1 year? Some programs make you even sign a contract saying that you will "finish". Depending on your bachelors and your GPA some schools want to see that you are doing a biology masters to prepare you even better.....I'm in the same boat, should I work? Get a masters?

ya man, i am in same boat.
problem is i missed deadline for bio masters
so is any masters okay?
for the courses in the masters, do we have to list them on aadsas under future courses...what if we dont know what courses yet but will be doing masters. just leave it blank? and do we still have to update aadsas later with teh exact courses?
