Hey Guys,

I need some advice. I applied to Meharry Med on the deadline: Feb15 i believe. I didn't even submit any letter of rec... I am not a minority and im from Canada. I didnt think I had a real chance at the school, which is why i didnt take the application that seriously.

Today, I find out I have an interview for April 28th. What do u feel my chances are....? Is it too late in the cycle, why was I given an interview if im not an URM?? ANy feedback would be nice. (btw, im still waiting for my first choice school in Canada)

Thanks

If your first choice is in Canada, this may result in a mediocre performance at the interview. If this is the case, then interviewing at Meharry would not be worth it for you.

I don't think that any of us can really tell you what your chances are, seeing as we aren't on the committee. If you haven't gettin in anywhere yet, and you think that u might like Meharry, then by all means come to the interview and give it your best. I wouldn't worry about not being a URM. If that mattered, you wouldn't have gotten the interview, esp. this late in the cycle. Do what works best for you.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

WTF!?! Why are they continuing to extend their interview days. At first Yahibaby said they extended them to April 10 now April 28!?!? Can't they get their act together?

I just turned down an April 21st invite. Can't believe they're running that late, but to the OP, if you have no other options...

I'm going down for an interview in the same week, also from canada, also a whitegirl, also a late app, also getting my references in now. i hope to get in. i don't interview too well, so i'm doing all i can to improve that between now and then!

they take alot of people off the waitlist. that said, if you wouldn't go to the school if accepted, don't go to the interview. it's also a VERY expensive trip there (plane + lodging + taxi).

If you book your flight early enough it won't be too expensive. I booked my flight to Nashville just a few days before my interview.

I am also Canadian and interview at Meharry. I am not from a disadvantaged background either. I had a total of 3 interviews and am anxiously awaiting a response.

The fact that they are still interviewing into April is good news for me b/c I thought I was too late to interview in early March.

Go to the interview regardless of price or how bad you THINK you will perform on the interview. Bottom line is that the same committee that accredits all the Canadian and US schools has also accredited Meharry. That means you will get a proper medical education and an M.D. degree that will be recognized anywhere in the world!

True Meharry isn't the best med school in the world, but if you were close to getting into Hopkins or Harvard I doubt you'd be concerned about a Meharry interview. The school is decent and the people are nice. If you don't get into another med school Meharry is not a bad place to go. And it's a LOT better than going to those shady Carribean schools...

I just declined an interview on April 6th. It was too short of notice for me. Good luck everyone. 🙂

Hi guys -

I just posted this in a different forum, and I'm unsure of the american context, and what schools truly do offer. I'm going on the basis of the johns hopkins journals I've seen, and the meharry website which speaks up politically. Any comments on this sort of statement?

then, there are those who find opportunity in the states that is not present in the canadian playing field. i'm in that category. especially coming from ontario [particularly difficult to surpass required gpa standards within ontario and as an oop], especially since the 'social-focus' school, Mac [mcmaster, who used to evaluate candidates on roles that are in service to community, and had 25 seats for that merit alone, the school that pioneered problem-based learning], changed policies on how to determine eligible to interview. looking at a lens of social/political/advocacy thrust in medical schools, i find that across tiers based on gpa/matching/ivy etc (very widely) places such as johns hopkins and meharry offer something that i don't think is offered in canada. canadian med schools haven't truly addressed representation of minorities/disadvantaged in medicine, and without that physical presence, there may not be much of a push to teach medicine with a nuanced approach from that angle. That angle would likely make a person u.s.-bound, even in the upper tiers.

what do you think of that statement? is that true of hopkins, that they strongly encourage seeing social dynamics play out in health? do they encourage md advocacy in the social realm? are there other schools in the u.s. who have that in mind? what do you think of seeing school selection through that lens? And more importantly for me - does Meharry teach with this lens? are there any classes that address the impact of oppression on health? i know there's a social justice student group...are graduates known for speaking up as advocates? are there graduates in doctors' groups looking for public health care...how about environmental advocacy - the destruction of the environment (in the name of dollars, which also encourages systems of oppression in the name of dollars...) is affecting health negatively. is there that lens?
