Breaking news of a merger between Memorial Hermann (Houston) and Baylor Scott & White (Austin/Dallas/etc).

https://www.chron.com/news/medical/article/Memorial-Hermann-to-merge-with-Baylor-Scott-13271983.php

The press release is short on details, like the name of the combined system and the location of the HQ. For those in the know, any thoughts on what this might mean for physician staffing at these hospital EDs?

Aside from the Texas Medical Center location (UT Houston primary training site), Memorial Hermann is currently a Team Health contract I believe. Who staffs the ED's at Baylor Scott & White? Are we in for more CMGs?

Definitely interested in this. Had no idea that there were even talks of a merger. If anything, I would have thought Baylor (in Houston) would have been the one to do a merger as there are always murmurs, but nothing definitive.

To complicate things further, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston has zero affiliation with Baylor Scott & White as far as I know.

UT Houston Medical School (UT Health) and Memorial Hermann have been cozying up in recent years, as have Texas A&M HSC and Scott & White.

So my idea for the combined name is: “The University of Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor Health System”. I’m sure you guys/gals can do better....

Yeah, one of them, can't remember which, a long time ago, used to be affiliated with Baylor University in Waco.

It looks like BSW kicked out EmCare in 2016. I think their ED positions are in-house now, but don't have first-hand knowledge. Hermann tried to move to using UT to staff two of their level 2 trauma centers but that plan seems dead in the water at the moment. Hermann would love to cut ties with TH and take things internal but UT doesn't have the recruiting infrastructure currently, I'm not sure that this merger changes that. I would expect if anything that the merger would lead to more hospital employed jobs than CMG jobs.

Mergers are almost always bad news for employees. It means a decline and pay and benefits and more layoffs. The healthcare industry is no different. I expect the same outcome from this merger.

We'd be incidental targets if any. Hermann already purged their CEO ranks (each CEO now has responsibility for 2 campuses) and considerably lightened their admin. For years they had been stockpiling failed directors and managers from outlying campuses by having them in compliance/education jobs for the system as a whole. A lot of those people lost their jobs in 2017. If anything this may end up being good for docs since the combined system is going to have a pretty strong negotiating stance with the insurers.

Hardly.
It will be Baylor Scott & White Hermann. The BSW CEO is the new CEO of the resulting company. It's only a "merger" if you believe they're equal. They're not.
UT and TA&M have affiliations with the groups, but are independent of the hospitals. This is different than some residency/university hospitals.

Baylor College of Medicine similarly had nothing to offer.

BCM is not affiliated with BSW. Or Hermann for that matter.

I never implied they did. I was correcting the earlier poster.
BCM is also not affiliated with Baylor University, for that matter.
