no dont waste your time. this test isnt about the nitty gritty details that you will forget as soon as you are done with the test. its about critcally analyzing passages and problem-solving. practice doing that b/c you wont see any quetions as specific as as the ones you were talking about.

You'll want to know a couple NMR values, definitely -OH and COOH. If you do the retired tests you'll see a couple NMR questions I think just these two but I could be wrong.

whoops, didn't even see the NMR value part of your question. NMR has come up before on practice exams and i think i even had one on the real deal. OH and COOH are definitnely the ones to know. Maybe even nitrogen and ketones.

Thanks for the imput..

I have another question if you guys are still around..

For IR i heard that we should only have to know the carbonyl 1700 peak and the alcohol 3600 peak and that should be enough... is that true?

Yes, that's what Kaplan notes/workshops also said - to definitely know for IR the carbonyl peak and alcohol peaks. For NMR, there is nothing you have to memorize, just look at the hydrogen shifts / integration peaks.

Since EK & Kaplan both said the same thing they're probably right 🙂

How complicated was the IR? Was it anything beyond having to know C=O and OH?

i had ONE NMR but no IR. the NMR question was REALLY tricky. with multiple choice, process of eliminaiton really works to your best advantage. I would have done the same if it was a trikcy IR question.

i would know IR key peaks C=O, N-H, and O-H. besides that, you are entering no mans land imo.

keep in mind, this will probably come in the form of 1 discrete, or 1 question on a passage PER TEST. so review accordingly.

I remembering the NMR being trickier than I expected, but the IR was basic. I wish I could remember what was asked but this was a year ago and I went into the test not knowing any NMR or IR.
