It seems like everything I learned for M1 is now gone or fuzzy. The framework is there but all the details that matter are pretty much in the ether. I did really well in my classes too and didn't really cram too much either. Is this normal?

welcome to my world.... repeat, repeat, repeat. If you see it in a clinical setting in the later years, you will probably remember it better.

With that being said, there is still plenty to know for Step 1 prior to hitting the wards. Which will mainly be covered in 2nd year. Only courses I can think of from first yr which will matter highly are physio and perhaps biochem. Try to put things mentally into clinical context and it might stick better.

Repeat, repeat, repeat.

The funniest thing is every time I'm relearning something, I'm always really excited that this time I'm "understanding it for good." Hehe, it's gone in 2 months after I move on to something else.

I really think my brain is zero sum. The more new stuff I learn, the more old stuff I push out. Like recording four hours on a 2-hour tape.

I feel the same way, OP. However when I look at the material again the info comes back a lot quicker.

The key is to anchor knowledge to something unusual so you can use that anchor to pull the facts out at a later date. The reason why you remember things so much better after seeing patients is because emotions and a new situation act as an anchor for the facts. You know what they say, you never forget your first! 😉

Look into gunner training... it helps keep the details there.

It really is a matter of being to relearn it quickly.

I forgot a lot of the details of microbiology. That being said, if you gave me 2 days I could know it as well as I did for my final exam...

This is the honest truth. It's always really embarrassing when I go back home and I can't remember anyone's name.

I forgot my brother's birthday. My dad even prompted me with the month and I still totally blanked out.

I think that memory palace thing is onto something though. No matter how much time has passed, I never forget the locations of things or how to get there.

I feel as if I have the exact same problem... did well in my classes, forgot all of it, and have now retained less M1 material than my classmates. Have a nagging feeling im going to bomb boards...

paranoid much?
