Do they really expect us to wear a wool suit in 90 degree weather? Sweating profusely due to humidity in addition to nervousness is not going to bode well. What are the rest of you gents gonna do?

i did it for a few job interviews in the middle of summer here w/ high humidity too....basically, don't take off the jacket and hope for good air conditioning

I wore the suit. So did everyone else.

Did you take your jackets off during the interview? At my last interview I saw one guy sporting an unconventional sweater/collared shirt combo.

question, How do you travel with your suit? i'm brand new to this "suit" business and i dont travel much.

I got this thing:

http://www.travelpro.com/FlightPro305/flightpro3rollaboardsuit.html

Found it in a store for $150, holds everything you need (shoes, socks shirt, change of clothes, toiletries), AND the 22inch fits version in a plane's overhead so you don't have to check it. Travelpro is the good stuff, but you can find a brand-x alternative for significantly less (like $40). If you're flying to a decent number of schools I would recommend you look into these.

Thanks, i'll go jcpenny and see if they have the $40 ones... they'll come in handy.

coming from hawaii, there's not many occasions that call for full-on decked out business attire--at least not in my line of work. anyway, i'm also new to the whole business suit thing, but i did stumble upon a bargain deal at SEARS this week. got a matching coat and slacks set for only $120 total. not bad, huh? then i went upstairs and bought my first reinforced garment bag luggage for $30. now that's what i call a steal!

back to the OP (though radiohead claims he's not the original OP), i'll probably always wear the suit/shirt/tie/slacks/shoes combo to all my interviews on the mainland (if any). i'm a quick sweater, unfortunately, but i guess most places are cooler than hawaii, though (i hope). i will probably just sport the shirt/tie/slacks/shoes combo for the hawaii interview, to which i just got invited this morning via snail mail. 😎

what about hair.

how do you keep it combed with wind and stuff.
i don't like putting oil or gel in hair b/c it looks greesy and if you sweat it drips on the forehead which blows even more.

how do you guys keep it.

You gotta use the products my friend. 😀

Usually, i like to keep my hair long, but when interviews rolled around i cut it relatively short (business, conservative-like). If it was still too long and wouldn't sit down on my head by itself, I would use some conditioner and hairspray/gel. Being from Texas, you would think that the heat would get to me and the sweat would drip on my forehead/suit. It really wasn't that bad when you let it dry before going into the heat (either dry before leaving....or use the A/C in the car to keep you cool). Don't worry...i'd try it out a few times before trying to do it on interview day though.

What is the consensus on facial hair? I'm currently sporting a goatee (along w/ 2 piercings I know I need to remove for interviews; both in my ear) and was told by a few people that no facial hair should accompany me on my interview. True?

suspenders anyone? would I just look like a pompous a-hole if I wore them?
Also I had the idea of wearing the colors of the schools I was interviewing at. Like on my U of Chicago interview, I would wear a black suit on white or anyother good color that goes with a maroon tie. Is that stupid or good sales move? I think one of the adcoms would appreciate that.

Buzz cut you (AKA a fade for those people who are Afr. amer.) if you do not want to use gel, grease, or hair spritz

conservative look:

fade or short part hair, no piercings, no facial hair, dark neatly pressed suit, pant cuff, shined shoes, 2 button (i'll have a 3 button), light shirt/dark tie, no patterns on anything

try not to look more wealthy than your interviewer.

200 points for the worst clothing idea ever. 😛
If I go on a Stanford interview and see a bunch of people wearing "cardinal" I seriously won't be able to hold in the laughter.

At least I would have an excuse to wear cardinal red, haha. That is, if I even get an offer for an invite... yeah right. What's funny, though, is that my shirt and tie color combination is yellow/blue, just like our rivals, Berkeley. I'm sure they would appreciate that. As for hair and facial fair, keep it clean, keep it trimmed.

LOL...nice. How about wearing your schools color?

This is a medical school interview not a pep rally.

I was on the fence for this issue myself. In the end, I decided to not leave anything to chance and hacked off my goatee before my first interview, and in hindsight, I am comfortable with that decision. All things being equal, it shouldn't matter, but it still might anyways.

Truman Stanford, I want to peel your avatar from the screen and perform some crazy necromancy and make it come to life.

Ohhhhh, Dr. Carter. . . .
