Men's Interview Clothing #3!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Four interviews attended, suit not cleaned yet. It still smells brand new, but I'm wondering if I should/need to get it cleaned before my next one?

If so, can I just take it to a dry cleaner? Will they know what to do with it?

If not all suits can be steamed, where should I check to see if the procedure can be applied to my suit ? Do you check with the store or does it depend on the cloth ? The little white tag on my suit says the shell is made up of 100% wool.

I actually did not pay attention to using white and lint-free pillowcase for the pressing method. Thanks for reminding me. I will probably just invest in the garment steamer to be safe.

You can steam wool suits and pretty much any other poly blend. I'm unaware of a standard suit fabric that can't be steamed.
It's a pretty straight forward procedure, we used to do it frequently when I worked in men's clothing retail. It freshens up the suit nicely.

You basically just put pressure on the area where there are wrinkles and steam, yes. It works quite well.

I will have to try sometime, thanks for the pro-tip.

As long as you didn't sweat in it a lot, it doesn't stink, and there are no visible stains, I'd prolong the dry cleaning as long as possible. But that's just me and my broke piggy bank talking 🙂

I have found this interesting discussion on the style forum while doing some reading about steaming method. It centers around a tailor's perspective on steaming suit and its detrimental effect.

I don't mean to disagree with you or anything, and in fact most of men agree that steaming is the best way to keep the suit fresh. I just put it up here to see what everyone thinks because the tailor has some interesting points. Normally I don't care this much about attire and clothing, but this suit is a small fortune in consideration of my tiny piggy bank right now, so I'm just a little neurotic about how to keep it in the best shape lol

Here's my suit, is this going to work (with white/light blue shirt + tie), or am I going to have to invest in something else?

Pics too small. Restarting my browser.

My reply was to your super duper large version before you downsized them 🙂

Sounds good, that was my plan. During the tour at Loyola we spent 10+ minutes in the anatomy lab talking to people and I was worried my suit was going to hold the smell. Luckily it didn't 😀

Oh crap. Again do you want to see the larger ones to make some comments or are the currents fine? I'm mainly trying to find a good bell curve of opinions about the stripes (too small, noticeable, fine, etc.) or about good alternatives (though I'd rather not spend even more money...)

Looks fine.

Whew! Thanks drizzt! Now all that's left is to prepare for my first at the end of the month.

Is pastel pink or purple too ostentatious for shirts? My go to suit right now is charcoal grey, light pink shirt with a flat black tie. Thoughts?

I think a different color than black for tie would be preferable; what shade of purple?

Light pink would be fine, but I probably wouldn't wear purple and I would also say no to the black tie.

I just bought my new suit, a black slim fit suit, looks pretty decent

I'm going to wear a white shirt with a orange/pinkish tie with little turtles on it my friend got me for good luck

I actually like that tie, but not for an interview. Its going to be more distracting than appealing.

It seems people here don't like black suits, but I personally do, however maybe not with a white shirt.

I'd say wear a light blue shirt.

I've had a nagging foot injury over the last few months and wearing dress shoes seems to aggravate it. Would it be OK if I brought a pair of sneakers for schools that give tours instead of my dress shoes?

You could probably bring them to wear for the tour but definitely carry some kind of bag with you to pack them into and put on your actual dress shoes before you go back in for the interview. Even if you were to tell the adcom about your foot issue, I'm sure they'd still have their reservations. While you may have a legit reason to wear tennis shoes, I'd say that unless it REALLY hurts or you are extremely uncomfortable, definitely stick with dress shoes.

I am getting my pants tailored and they are taking 1 inch off of each side of the legs, tapering it all the way down. Is this too much? I definitely don't want it skin tight, but I do like the "slim fit" look. I am skinny so it goes well with me, I am just afraid the final product might be too tight? The suit coat is semi-slim. Should I call them and tell them to only take 0.5 inches off each side of the legs rather than 1 inch?

Looks like I'll be sporting the athletic tape on my foot then! (ha, get it? 😛)

I don't see how anyone could possibly answer this without some pictures.

Sorry, I was just wondering if that is too much to take off. The pants are a little on the loose end, but when she said she is taking off 1 inch on both sides of each pant leg (a total of 2 inches), it scared me.

Which one looks better?

I actually own the Tissot on top and it's one of my favorite watches. That said, I don't think I'd wear it to an interview - chronographs and similar watches are inherently less formal. It's great to wear with business-casual or on a date, but if you're in the market for a watch for an interview I'd suggest something a little more plain than either of those (and especially the second).

Or get both. But I've been on a watch kick recently.

For those of you looking for suits and have some time...check out Indochino!

http://www.indochino.com/

They teach you to take your measurements, and tailor a suit for you! It's literally the best-fitting suit I've ever worn. I cannot go back to off-the-rack suits anymore! 🙂

I've seen this mentioned and have looked into it. How did it fit after the first round? Did you have to send it back for adjustments? I might hold off until their traveling tailor comes to town.

My suit fits amazingly. They have videos to really help you take the measurements, and you can do some reading about suit fits and styles to get a sense of what you like in your suit (in regards to sleeve length, pants inseam length, etc) I thankfully did not have to send it back.

A friend of mine did the traveling tailor, and had a wonderful experience. Do take advantage of it if they're in town!!

I went with propersuit over indochino.. slightly more expensive but way worth having someone to fit you and talk you through it.

Thank god(s) I bought closed-lace captoe bluchers for my interviews. I would have been rejected had I gone with my old open lace blocky shoes. 😀

j/k. I'm really grateful that there are people like drizzt who can help clueless premeds with basic fashion advice. I don't know if it made a difference, but it gave me extra confidence on my interview day knowing that I looked respectable.

I always found men's fashion to be insanely easy compared to women's fashion. There is very little to think about for a guy. Just a suit, dress shirt, dress pants, shoes, done in 10 mins 🙂

Praise being dudes! And be thankful to have a WAY easier time as far as how to dress compared to females D:

Please do not wear a shiny suit to an interview.

Or anywhere.

Haha it isn't really that shiny at all. I mean, certainly nothing like this...

The reason I love the Calvin Klein suit is that it fits me like a glove. It needs no alteration besides sleeve shortening and pant hemming.

Hmmm, it needs no alterations besides 2 alterations 😕

Why don't you post a pic if you in the suit?

Every suit should come with unhemmed pants, and almost every suit will require the sleeves adjusted to the proper length.

If that CK suit fits you well, odds are that others made by them that aren't shiny will too.

Couple questions:

Regarding my suit I posted on page 27, it's a 3 button. So I should button top 2 while standing and unbutton both while sitting correct?

The place I'm traveling to interview tomorrow is frigid 42 during the day. Can I wear a scarf, as long as it's not too clashy? Of course not during the actual interview, but when walking in and during school tour.

Either button the top 2 or just the middle. Then leave it buttoned while standing and unbuttoned while sitting.

As for me, I've gained about 10-12lbs since I bought my suit in July. Because of this, my thick, solid, and tight body is coming pretty close to ripping out of the chest area. I already had my suit jacket taken in, but now I need it taken out. Does anyone know whether it's better to get a jacket "taken out" if that makes sense, or would it be ok to adjust the button position to give the jacket more room when buttoned?

What about slacks, dress shoes, a professional-looking dress-shirt and matching tie, but instead of a jacket, a nice sweater over-top?

Maybe you could get away with that in the Pacific Northwest, but I would wear a suit to an East Coast interview.
