I'm currently applying out to medical schools....and wondering if i should mention the fact that I am enrolled in a post-bacc program. Any pros/cons to doing this? I'd rather have interviews focus on my undergrad extracurriculars than the current post-bacc I am in (even though i'm doing super well in post-bacc).

why wouldn't you mention the post-bacc? There must be some reason as to why you enrolled in the program in the first place.

Well I enrolled in it because i am otherwise a very borderline applicant (3.4 and 25 mcat). I actually have a guaranteed acceptance into the med school with the program. I dunno, but it seems like if i mention the post-bacc it takes away attention from my undergrad work and accomplishments. I also don't want med schools to think that I'm not as interested in their school because i'll end up going to another med school anyway. The positive thing is that i have a semester's work of 4.0 in the post-bacc....so maybe it'll help my application to just mention it. What do ya think?

As a post-bacc student myself, I think you should definitely mention the program in some context. It doesn't at all detract from what you accomplished as an undergrad. In fact, it shows that you are taking an extra step and extra time to better yourself academically. It is a measure of dedication on your part. But of course you should focus more on the content of the program so as not to give the impression that you are not seriously considering other med schools.

Good luck 🙂

May I ask what postbacc program you are in?

Hi,

I am enrolling in a post-bac this Fall and plan to reapply to med schools the year after. I am curious and would like to know if you rewrote your personal statements & essays. Did you retake your MCAT? If so, did you study on your own or did you take a prep course?

In regards to your dilemma, I think it's best to let the adcoms know that you invested efforts, time & energy in a post-bac program. This will be an indication to them that you are very serious/determined in pursuing medicine. Good luck!
