Hey and congrats to everyone,

Mercer is indeed a good school, almost all my friends go there. I am kinda late applying and everything was just finalized this week. Hopefully sometime next year I will get an interview. I only know of one person who actually applied in January and took the Jan PCAT test date and still got in. I am a GA TECH graduate, so I hope that helps too 🙂

I applied in Jan 09 and took the PCAT in Jan 09 and I got accepted. You guys will be fine!!! Good luck! 👍

I have an interview for next Friday, 12/11. I'm so excited! 😍

AFAIK, they look very favorably on a bachelor's degree. When I got the acceptance letter, they stipulated to let them know if I fail to complete it. Rather ominous.

One person in my interview group had completed a masters, and that impressed Dr. Bartling.

I did interview fairly early though, no clue how many seats are left, but I think you have a good chance.

I asked Jordana that earlier this week (Wednesday) and she told me they haven't accepted 1/2 yet so you still have a chance if your specs are good enough. Mercer is a private school so it doesn't matter if you are in state or out of state.

Yeaahh!! I got into Mercer today. My interview was in early November, time to start applying for scholarships and waiting it out for UNC and UCSD!
hey congrats i got into mercer too. i got the call yesterday. what kind of scholarships are you planning to apply for? Are you going to be staying off campus or in school? i wld really appreciate your reply.

Does anyone know why Mercer changed their deadline to Feb 1st???

I'm not positive about Mercer, but I've heard many pharmacy schools that are extending their deadline this year due to LACK (yea, I can't believe it either) of applicants...maybe the economy is holding people back from applying (I actually hope so)...

This is what I've heard from the admission boards of a couple pharmacy schools, so maybe it's the same with Mercer.

Anyways, I'll be at Mercer if I don't get into UGA (interview Jan 19th!!!)

Good luck all.

I have an interview there too! Are you from Georgia? I wonder how many people from instate are applying compared to out of state!

You're right. I spoke with Jordana last week and she said she's surprised by the number of applications "trickling" in and was wondering if people are just holding their applications until everything else is submitted to PharmCAS (i.e. transcripts, LOR's, and PCAT scores). That might be a reason why the deadline was extended... to give more people a chance to apply to Mercer.

Congrats on your interview invitation with UGA! I'm applying there too, but I didn't submit my application until a couple of weeks ago. I'm hoping I get an interview as well. :xf:

Congrats on your interview! See you there, if your interview is this Friday.

I don't know about the number of in-state vs. out-of-state applications. Here are the stats of acceptances according to PharmCAS:

http://www.pharmcas.org/collegesschools/schoolmercerpage.htm

60-70 out-of-state vs. the 145 accepted. However, I was told that Mercer offers a lot more acceptances (~300), and some people may decide not to go there.

I JUST submitted my application recently, but I had a hold up that sort of delayed everything. I thought I was way behind everyone else being that Mercer is rolling admissions, but I guess not. I'm kind of relieved because Mercer is one of my top choices and I was scared that it would be harder to get in. I'm out of state though so I'm applying to UF instead of UGA.

Hi everyone!

I am applying to Mercer as well, and I was just wondering where can I find more information on Mercer besides their website? Seems like a lot of people agree that they have a great program, can someone please explain that what makes Mercer a great school?

Mercer vs. UGA....which one is better? besides Mercer is in ATL, I'm in ATL right now and I love it! Alright, thanks!!

Oh and I got an interview invitation to UGA as well, so I might see some of you there 😀

Hey guys,

Mercer is definitely a better school in my opinion. They have better rotation options since it's located in the city. UGA is not as good, but still a great program plus in state tuition which is a plus. Also if you don't mind living in the country, then UGA is good for you. I just got my interview invite today for Jan 22nd, and you are absolutely right, this year, there are not as many applicants, so the odds are looking good for you 🙂 Melva is an Angel 🙂

I thought the number of people wanting to go back to school would increase due to a bad economy...since business is going badly and jobs are hard to find then you might as well go back to school right? LOL...

What do you think of the Atlanta area? I'm from Arizona, and I've never been to GA. Is it country or is it more lively in the city area?🙂

Hey i'm from los angeles but i live in atlanta. its mostly city but there are areas that may seem country to people from large cities. but to me its no different from any other city i've seen.

I'm from Florida and I absolutely love Georgia and Atlanta. My dad lived in Savannah for a long time so I was there a lot. I know some people will disagree with me, but Georgia (even Atlanta) has MUCH nicer people than Florida. The city has good shopping, food, etc. Plus I sort of like the fact that there are some areas that can be country.

I've been living in Atlanta for the past 5 years, attended college here (GA TECH), and worked here (bar tender, and delivery driver while in college). From my experience, I really like this city. It is a very diverse city, the people are friendly and you still get that southern hospitality. Everywhere else in GA is pretty much country except for Savannah (I also lived there for a year). Even as far the accent is concerned, Atlanta residents have that neutral American Accent. There are numerous places in Atlanta with different cultures and way of life, for example, Atlanta( the metro area) is broken down into three different grids - you have (1). Downtown, which is mostly businesses, fancy restaurants, Ga Aquarium (great place by the way), World Of Coke, Famous Centennial Olympic Park, Ga Dome, CNN, and so forth, mainly for tourists... (2) Midtown is the next grid, this is where in my opinion the heart of Atlanta is. Here you find great locals, a very huge gay population(ranked 2nd in the US, after San Francisco), Piedmont park, great restaurants, very chill subdivisions like virginia highlands, Lil 5 points (a very cool and eclectic mixture of people, this place reminds me of San Diego, I saw a cop smoking weed once here, no kidding) and there are ALOT of people our age/generation between 18 yrs - 35yrs old. I hardly see children in Midtown. You also have really nice clubs, spas, Latin salsa places, my school GA TECH, Museums, art galleries, ATLANTIC STATION which you must visit (think of it as a HUGE mall but outdoors, it even has a school in it, apartments, cinemas, entertainment -it's like a small city that has everything you would want all in one spot, you name it) Restaurants from all countries, Indian, Pakistan, Ethiopian, Morocco, French, etc.... (3) Finally the last grid is BUckhead and this is at the north part of Atlanta, it actually has it's own downtown and this part of Atlanta is for the rich and famous. All these entertainers originally from ATL like Usher, Lil Jon, Outkast, Ludacris, all have condos, houses and even restaurants that they own right here.....Fancy cars, fancy restaurants, fancy dogs, lol...Everything here is super expensive, from food to living....I think the tax rate is between 8-9% while it is 6% in other parts of the city. Very clean, very beautiful high risers,condos.... the buildings look brand new and what's ironic about this place is that most of its inhabitants are old, retired people, mainly rich people.....so buckhead is very conservative unlike Midtown and Downtown, nevertheless there are still youth around and nice malls and very good looking people here 🙂 If you want to become a pharmacist, work and live in ATL, buckhead is the place to be, lol just sayin. Besides these three main grids, you also have DECATUR - it's half part in Atlanta and the other half is it's own city. This is where EMORY university is and it's also a very cool area. You also have Marietta, located North of Atlanta about 15-20min drive....mostly suburbia and many people live and commute to school and work (hence traffic) There is also Chamblee (Mercer is very near to this sub division), Tucker, Alpharetta, Riverdale, Douglassville, SMryna, stone mountain and so on, all these are part of GREATER ATLANTA. So when you hear people say am from Atlanta, it necessarily isn't true because the real Atlanta is FULTON county( whereby all these other small cities are just part of the GREATER ATLANTA area, and they have their own counties such as Cobb county for Marietta and SMryna, Dekalb county for decatur, Gwinnet county for Chamblee and Tucker, Clayton county for Riverdale and so on) The transportation system here is actually pretty good. WE have a subway system called MARTA and it is very good if you travel back and forth between those three grids that i mentioned. Saves on GAS and you dont have to worry about Traffic. Security is also good with this transportation. You also have other private transportation services between counties and they are all great, and YES they go to MERCER, not subway though, you would have to ride the subway then take a bus. Crime in the main city is usuall, just like any other city would. The area where Mercer is located is good and quite safe, I dont here many stories from there. Most crime comes from SOUTH and SOUTH WEST ATLANTA, so don't get an apartment there!!!! MIdtown crime is not as bad, really there are too many gay people living here, it's such a friendly place, and too colorful for criminals, lol.
Night life is quite good although there is a law in Atlanta that night clubs close at 3am (not that you would be partying that late while you are pharm student) and they don't sell liquor on Sundays ( this is a conservative state) ALso I should mention that the location of Mercer is about 12 miles NOrth from the city, so your not really in the city per se. It's more like the suburbs, but you are very close to the city. The location of mercer is in a nice quiet environment suitable for your studies, and very convenient to be near the city if you ever want to relax and have a good time with friends. I personally live in Buckhead and if I get accepted I would just drive and hop on the interstate(would be at school in less than 15 min counting traffic in).....Oooh and another thing, TRAFFIC IS HORRIBLE IN ATLANTA...this city is growing so much, we have more than 6 million people and interstate lanes are only 6 lanes, so RUSH HOUR is TERRIBLE especially friday...when I was a delivery driver, this sucked SO MUCH. If you are out of state, I advise getting an apartment near the school and on the outer limits or rim of the city...traffic here is minimal.
I know I have typed so much, but I feel like this information would help all you guys and gals out of state. Atlanta is a wonderful city, it has a lot of history, and a lot to see. I hope all your interviews go well and that you get accepted... I have my interview on Jan 22nd 2010. I'll be more than glad to answer any other question abt the city because I feel like I know it very very well 🙂

That was awesome... thank you! You should like me talking about Miami! LOL Do you know how far Roswell is from Mercer? My friend's uncle lives there and drives to downtown everyday. My cousin also lives in Symyrna and works at the CDC. So I sort of know about the suburbs, but not really because when my dad lived in Savannah we mainly went to the city part.

I knew about Buckhead because it is the nice part, but I don't really want to spend a lot on an apartment if I even get an interview and accepted. My apartment in Miami was 1000 a month not including utilities so I'm aiming for less than that not necessarily more.

Midtown sounds like a really cool area. I'm used to living someplace really diverse and colorful, but if I'm going to be studying a lot I don't want to get too distracted either.

I think it's cool you were a bartender. I was a cocktail waitress in Miami but I also have some experience bartending too. I don't really want to work in pharmacy school but maybe a weekend job would be do-able if I had to work. Is it easy to get a job at a small sports bar or lounge in Atlanta? I hated it because in Miami most places close at 5am and some stay open til 11 the next day or 24 hours, so it was not very friendly for a student trying to work at the same time. I worked one place that closed at 4am, but every weekend they hosted UFC and boxing fights so if you came in at 2:30 to open then you were working at least a 12 hour shift. 🙁 Not fun.

I have an interview for next Friday, 12/11. I'm so excited! 😍

I have an interview on Friday 12-11 too...I'm a bag of nerves. It's my first interview and hopefully i won't have to go for another. How are you preparing for it?

The Interview Feedback section is really helpful. You can read up on what questions have been asked in previous interviews. I'm also making a list of possible questions they might ask, and I'm probably going to read over my personal statement and supplemental essay.

Most importantly, remember to RELAX! This is Mercer's opportunity to get to know the REAL you, beyond what goes on paper. Good luck preparing for it! Looking forward to meeting you on Friday. 👍

I printed out the Mercer interview feedbacks and yeah also have my PS and Supp. statement with me. Hopefully we'll do well and hear back quickly because the waiting is hardest part. Good luck! and hope to see you Friday.

Loved Mercer. Great campus. So cold though. 😛

Well explained. you know your stuff very well. I am now more excited to come to atlanta. From what you have said buckhead is the place to be at.Thanks

Although buckhead is a pretty nice place, there are still plenty of other locations that are better as far as cost, traffic, and finding a job while working.

Roswell is on the NE side of Mercer. Roswell is right before Alpharetta so I would guess about a 15- 20 min drive because you would have to hop on a highway then hop on to I-85, but am sure there are back roads too. From what I've heard, your first year as a pharmacy student, you want to concentrate on your studies and not work so you can get used to the work load. After, you can work if you feel you can balance your schedule. It is not easy to get a job at a sports bar in Buckhead (I already tried), but it's really easy to get a job in Midtown and also other surrounding areas, sometimes they don't even require a bartending school requirement. But honestly, if you absolutely have to work, I suggest applying as a concierge at one of the many high rise condos and apartments either at Buckhead or Midtown. They pay REALLY good money, and all you do is just sit and greet all the residents as well as sign in guests who visit, plus you wear formal clothes. You can work night shifts or shifts right after school. Since you will be sitting most of the time, and not doing much, you could be studying, doing homework, facebooking, e.t.c while at the same time getting paid that MOOLAH. Just a friendly suggestion. I admire your hardwork while at Miami. Bartending is also great money, sometimes I make about $300- $400 a night, but this is at Midtown and Midtown has a huge gay population and they usually tip really good especially if you are a cute guy, lol....they also tip girls too, so don't worry, you just have to charm them and say sweet things to them....it's all about the act and attitude baby!! I just had an interview at University of Hawaii, it was a blast, but Mercer is still my # 1 choice. Hope to meet all you guys soon. I want to be social chair. Good luck to all. Let me know if you have any questions, and if you want to send me a message privately, my email is [email protected]

GA TECH....ACC CHAMPS baby....ORANGE BOWL, here we come!!

Got the call today! Very, very, very good day 😀

Well Atlanta sounds like an awesome place to live. I've only visited, but it seems to be similar to what I am used to in Miami. If I get accepted to pharmacy school I want to put my grades first before working, but if I do get a little bored on the weekends or something it would be nice to make a little extra money rather than be tempted to go out and spend it. 🙂 I have my bartending license from 2007, but I remember most of the important things from working. I would prefer a nice desk job like the concierge one that you mentioned though. That sounds more relaxed. We have a really large gay community where I'm from too... and I really do think they are much better tippers! LOL The bartenders at the predominately gay clubs/bars do make a lottt of money whether they're straight, gay, or girls, But anyway... I really hope I get accepted! PharmCAS is STILL calculating my GPA, but I emailed the college about submitting my supplemental and they said to go ahead and get it in while I am waiting. I'm assuming I won't hear anything for a while since they will be off for Christmas break, but hopefully when break is over I will hear something.

Me TOO 🙂 Very good day indeed.🙂

Congrats!! I MISSED my call this afternoon because I was at work! 😱

Jordana left me a voicemail to call her back, so I'm hoping it's good news.

did anyone from the 12/4 interview hear from Mercer yet?

Congrats to all who just got the good news! See you all soon 👍

So how long does it take for them to accept or reject you after the interview?

The Admissions Committee usually meet the first week of each month and decide who they want to accept or put on wait list. They should give you a call right afterward. For some reason, they met twice this month (I got my accept the first week of Dec and saw some other people got their acceptance last week).

They met twice this month so that they could make some decisions before the holidays.

Hey guys! good luck to all those interviewing in january, and congrats to those that were already accepted. I also got that wonderful call on tuesday being granted a spot. Definitely the best phone call ever lol. But does anyone know if there is an official acceptance thread yet? i couldnt find one. And Tinkerbell22, im from miami also, and it doesnt seem like the transition is going to be that bad, especially from what that other guy said.

Really??? What school did you go to if you don't mind me asking??? PharmCAS still hasn't mailed my application to any schools I'm so sad 🙁 I went to the II_II lol

Eewww F the U haha. Im only kidding. i went to FIU, the less recognized "U" in miami =/.

I was wondering if anyone could give advice or opinion whether I should retake the PCAT on Jan 23rd 2010. I actually have an interview at Mercer the day before- Jan 22nd, and I feel like I would be concentrating more on preparing for the interview than the test. My test score was just around Mercer's minimum (in the 70s, so do you think I should still take it, in the event I am put on the wait list....so once the score comes out and I improved, it shows that I am determined.....but what if I get a worse score than before? If i was to get accepted and still took the test and got a lower score, does it matter?

So i submitted my supplemental on 12/3, and they sent an email back saying I would hear something in 2-3 weeks. Is mercer tru to their word in terms of the 2-3 week thing and letting people know if they will get interviewed or not?

Okay, update--i just got an email to interview on 1/22. 🙂 however, I may not be able to go on that day due to some work responsibilities (have to conduct trainings). Do you think mercer could give me a later date for an interview? Or could I reschedule for another day in January? How flexible are they?

Dr.iz-n, the staff at mercer, are super nice and very understanding. The day of my interview, i had to be back in miami that night at 8 when the interview ended at 4. Even though i ended up making it, when i told them about it they asked me if i wanted to change my interview date. So im sure if you explain to them about your job you should be fine.

Thanks, I'll contact them tomorrow and ask if I can reschedule. Thanks for your help!

LOL Hey I love the Golden Panthers! 😀 I probably have more friends from FIU than I do from UM because it's a bigger school. Did you apply to any of the schools in Florida? I only applied to UF in state... but PharmCAS is taking a really long time to calculate my GPA so I will be surprised if they still have interview slots open for me.

Haha thats cool. Well i also applied to UF and Nova. i went to Nova's interview but wasnt really impressed. But yea i think pharmcas is probably taking long because they have so many applications coming in at this time. But i contacted UF about my application status and they told me they dont start reviewing applications until mid december. i still havent even heard from them and i pharmcas was done verifying my application by the end of november. So i think you should be fine. the important thing at least is that everything is submitted to pharmcas. But i would suggest you get on the supplemental application for UF because it is SUPER long.
