Merging the Pre-Osteopathic and Pre-Allopathic Forums

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have to say, originally my thought was merge the med student forums and keep pre-meds separate. I think my mind is changing with some of the ... umm... informative ... posts and opinions I've seen regarding the topic.
I think you know what you mean.

Merge 'em. Let's watch this place explode.

If this is the attitude, ignorance, and malice that will come from pre/allo students, then there is no reason to merge them whatsoever. I'll be banned in a week.

Haha I'm gonna go ahead and assume you referenced Handy's attitude and not mine😉

Truthfully I don't care much for the pre/allo board because people are way too uptight about stupid ****. (broad generalization I know)

I expect better from med students (MD and DO) its time people grow up and lose the elitist attitude and realize we are all going into medicine as a profession. Some of my best friends are in MD schools and they have people they can't stand in their classes just like some people in mine. The similarities are there if people can just lose the holier than thou attitude.

You see how ridiculous this argument is now? I can assure you that there's more similarity between SGU and my school than my school and any DO school. Why is it such a big problem to group caribbean with MD and DO together?

So, remind me then, when was the last time you went to through customs between school and visiting home? Which states aren't going to accept your medical education (since only 3 of the schools in the Carb. are recognized in all 50 states)? Carb. students (as well as all other international medical students) face legitimate additional issues in terms of funding, procedure for gaining medical licensure, dealing with life in a foreign country (if you're a US student going abroad for medical school), financial aid, and the focus of the school (well, excluding RVU as an outlier).

The difference between MD and DO students is, what? OMM and COMLEX vs USMLE (which plenty of DO students take both)?

If you read those forums, similarities are few and there will be a lot of confusions shall the board are merged.

Being an allo student, I don't want any discussion of OMM in my board unless you can back it up with vigrous peer review study. If you merge those two boards, it's likely that allo board will get thread like "post your OMM antedote"

I hate to say this, but the average allo and the average osteos face different issues. we even take different board exam. I don't see why there should be an merger especially when the board is going toward specalization (there are even specific thread for each year)

Handy is the perfect example of why we should not merge. I really don't want to have to sift through pages and pages of posts from 21-22 year old kids who think they know everything about everything. They shadow/volunteer a tiny bit in a clinical setting and they know how the whole medical system works.

I vote no on proposition merging the forums.

Hahaha, yes ... definitely his attitude, not yours. Sorry for any confusion.

I think merging the Allo and Osteo forums is a good idea. Many of the issues and content surrounding the students at this level are pretty much the same. I frequently post on both forums without skipping a beat. I envision something similar to Step 1 forum. At this point, students have developed enough maturity to understand that medical school is medical school, regardless of which degree of the two degrees is pursued, therefore there tends to be fewer MD vs. DO nonsense.

On the other hand, I am frequently turned off by the immaturity and randomness I see in the PA forum and don't participate much there any more. There is sometimes good discussion there, but more often, it is very much a "Mad Max Thunderdome" of egos colliding. If you stick around and wait for the dust to clear, you may get some use out of it, otherwise, you can easily get caught up in stupid banter that leads to threads being closed and people being banned. Still, sometimes, poignant topics are brought up and good discussion can be found.

The PO forum tends to be, in my opinion, more free from the crap, stupid banter, and wild displays of ego you might find in the thunderdome, but it can be too quiet sometimes. If you ignore the cyclic threads that beg to be directed to the FAQ's, the forum can be extremely informative and people are generally friendly and welcoming, but it can also lack zest. It is almost serene. Traffic is considerably more light in PO than in PA.

I'm not opposed to combining the two, since it is clear to me and most of my colleagues that the differences are few and it would be in alignment with what is, but I feel afraid of losing the good qualities and unique flavor often found in the PO forum. I mean, PA would absolutely and completely swallow PO and after the merger, it is likely that you would just be left with the thunderdome with the occasional osteo-specific thread that would be either lost in the shuffle or closed altogether because of PA banter or MD vs. DO crap. If there was a way to preserve the integrity of it all, I would be for it... I don't currently see that there is, though. Judging from my experiences, many pre-meds lack the specific maturity that you see in the Osteo or Allo forums, that would make combining easy. I think pre-meds play a different ballgame where PA and PO are different enough, at least in their own minds and egos, that they may be best separate...at least for now.

1)I can think of more similarities between MD/DO than differences
2)There are allo schools that have taught OMM seminars..they didn't seem to be quite so snobby about it
3)What's it like to own you own discussion board?
4)Do you read every thread you see posted in a forum?
5)COMLEX/USMLE have an enormous overlap of material, and tons of DO students take Step 1
6)Interestingly enough, a good number of the people that post in the c/o 2013 thread in pre-allo are DO students. Go figure.

I say merge 'em.

It's hilarious to watch these identical threads in the pre-DO and pre-MD forums. The difference in attitude is shocking. Maybe they shouldn't be merged after all???

I was just thinking the same thing. This forum actually has a mature discussion going, where most seem to be advocating the separation of the two forums. The main difference between the two is that the DO thread is about keeping them separate because they don't want to deal with the childish bs that goes on in pre-allo, and the pre-allo folks don't want them put together because they fear that they they will be associated with the 'inferior' pre-osteo students...

I think this is reason enough to keep them seperated. I also find it difficult to keep my cool in the pre-allo forum, but have never lost my cool in the pre-osteo forum. Overall, I think the difference is going to be stigma and volume. Pre-allo folks aren't going to like the pre-osteo folks posting questions and will likely follow-up with smartass snide comments, and pre-allo has so much volume that it will be difficult to find the meaningful pre-osteo posts.

I think it would be better for everyone to keep them separate, but I wouldn't be upset if they were joined....

I'll throw in another vote for merging the Allo and Osteo forums. As for the pre-___ forums merge, I'm not to sure what to say.

When I was applying, I found much more solace here than I ever did in PreA and often times more information. I felt pretty comfortable sharing my story of struggle and I didn't even mention anything specific to DO schools. The thing is PreA seemed to me almost like a general internet board in its atmosphere. When I came here, it's like it was either business or lightheartedness...nothing too random.

I don't know how much personal feelings for each forum matter, but I just wanted to let it out. It might sound like I don't want a merger, but merging the med student forums is something I'm interested in seeing right now.

Please keep the pre-med forums separate. We have a nice, relaxed board here and I would hate to see it overrun with gunners.

a. I want to kick you in the chest, hard.

B. Similarities are few?? How so?? Both paths require identical course work, a bachelors, mcat, med schools are identical with the exception of omm, do students can sit for usmle and complete acgme residencies??? Yeah, i barely see the connection. If it wasn't for that d in both the titles, we'd be like apes and humans.

C. Hey handy, are you an allo student??? I never would have guessed. Roflmao, your boards??? Do you really have such a pathetic, micro-world, outlook on life. They aren't your boards chief, and hahahah yeah, i'm sure the lack of vigorous (nice spelling by the way - irony), peer reviewed study is going to cause an absolute downfall. It lacks the logic and thought seen in the 9000 'i have a 3.99 and 42t, am i screwed???' threads seen in the clearly superior pre-allo threads.

D. Why do you even speak??? Do student: 4 year undergrad, pre-med classes, mcat, med school, usmle, acgme residency, bc in abms field. Where's the difference??? How in the name of god would you even know the differences?? Where were you born? God you sicken me. Seriously, you're so pathetic. I know i dislike you as a human just from the things you type on the internet. If you're the type of elitst, repulsive mindset that lurks in the pre-allo, allo forums, then screw it, keep them separate. That's always a good thing, right???

<3

just stopping in to see how this end of the discussion is going... and i want to say that over at pre-allo, we're not *all* like Handy!!! 🙁

(for the record, i could care less if they're merged or not.)

👍 Please, stop by more often and provide a counter to Handy's style.

haha here's a start: the only reason i had any reservations about merging the forums is because i'm one of those toolish people that clicks on every single thread that sounds remotely interesting or relevant to me... so more posters = more threads = too much for me to keep up with! ...then i realized that was ridiculous and it really won't be a big deal. keep on keepin' on, pre-osteos! and feel free to join in the fun on the class of 2014 thread if you haven't already 😀
