I have notes that say it only refers to precipitation rxns, but just read on wiki that it refers to all double displacement rxns.

Is it the latter?

a double replacement rxn could be a precipitate rxn. precipitate rxns just refers to producing solids from aqueous reactants. But a metathesis means double replacement.
