I've been thinking about this program lately. Does anybody have any inside scoop? I know the residents work hard, but is it a high pressure environment? How long are their days really? Will I be a bad mother if I train there? I do have a supportive husband and family relatively close by. I'm thinking of putting them first and seeing what happens.

Well - I know some things. Have met a couple of people who trained there. They do work very hard, although many of the people who go there are the types who would choose to do so anyway. The program size has increased this year, and supposedly more PAs have been hired, so the resident workload may go down a bit. However, the schedule is still intense and it is a high volume and high expectation institution.

You definitely want to love pathology if you go there. I strongly considered it. Had a great interview day, and they seemed to like me and told me I was ranked high enough to match. It ended up coming down to not really wanting to stay in Boston. It's expensive and crowded.

Probably like me - I interviewed there not expecting to like it, and came away kind of torn. Ended up ranking them #2. It is something of a self-selective program though - people go there who like their philosophy of training. I am pretty sure I would have been happy there, but I'm not sorry I didn't rank them first.

One former graduate did caution me that MGH is quite fellow-driven. Residents often work more with fellows than with attendings - but not always. And preview time and spending time with attendings is important.

I do love pathology - but I love my kid too. I don't know what i'm going to do. I still love Iowa the best, but MGH is near my family. They even get hospitalized there 🙄 .
