MIAMI: Is miami only interviewing in-staters?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just recently got an interview invite from them out of state. I've seen a couple of out-of-staters post that they are getting interviews as well. Realize that they are very selective in their intereviewing (~300), so be patient.

Hope that helps

Brian

I'm out-of-state and got an interview invite back in September (didn't end up going, though). Keep in mind that Miami only interviewed like 100 out-of-staters last year and took 80 of them, so the major cut for them is between secondary and interview.

same here...

out-of-state and interviewing the last date they offered in dec.

but, i only just recently got notified

I stop by the admissions office every once and a while and both in state and out of state applicants have been interviewing since the interviews started back in September. I don't know what the proportion is but I've definitely seen a lot of both.

Don't freak out if you haven't gotten an interview invite yet, they'll be interviewing until April. I was an April interviewee last year and made it in so you never know, they'll keep accepting people even from the later interview rounds. Good luck! 😎

hi alex
long time ..how was europe
did u watch out for the water and bangersandmash?

ps: can you tell us which day is the interview day for UM?

In my group, I think we were 12 people and 3 of us were out of state.......

Yeah... I took your advice and stayed away from the British water. I didn't want... you know.... 😱

The interview days are Mondays and Fridays. I hope they send you an interview invite soon, you're like the #1 Miami fan on SDN. 😀

There are A LOT of UM undergrads that got accepted into my class this year so you definitely have a better than average chance of getting an invite and acceptance!

Hey Alex. I have an interview down there on Dec. 10 and I am a FL resident. Is it true that Miami doesn't interview nearly as many applicants as most schools? I've heard they accept somewhere around 75% of the people who interview, is that accurate? I also stated my preference for the new FAU campus for several reasons. Do you know how that is going for those students there this year?

Thanks.

Congrats on the interview!

Once you've passed that cut and made it to the interview stage, the acceptance rate really is something like 75%. So, believe it or not, for this school making it to the interview is the toughest hurdle. Just relax when you come to interview on Dec. 10th and if you don't get accepted right away and they instead put you on the alternate list, dont get discouraged. That 75% acceptance rate also includes ppl brought in off the alternate list and the best part about that is that Miami's alternate list has a lot of movement. A little over 40% of my class were alternates before they got accepted, that just goes to show you.

As far as the UMSM@FAU program goes, I think most of the students up there like it. I know a couple that aren't too crazy about it. The plusses are that they get brand new facilities that were built just recently and more attention from teachers/administrators because they're a smaller group but the trade off is that they have to drive (or take a school shuttle bus) the 45 miles to Miami and then the 45 miles back from Miami EVERY couple of weeks for clinical skills training with the rest of our class.

At the end of the 2nd year all the UMSM@FAU students have to come down permanently to Miami anyways and so I personally don't think it's worth it unless you're form Boca Raton or the surrounding area. I have no regrets over choosing the Miami campus, the Rosenstiel building where we have our labs/lectures in Miami is older than the one at FAU but its still a great place to learn and the auditoriums are comfortable and state of the art with their own little TV production booths at the side of the auditoriums for digitally recording all the lectures and posting them on the web.

LOL
i * hope * UM is bagged
you know its been great, is great and will be great..to be a " MIAMI HURRICANE "!

thanks for all ur help and support and i am so glad u still have ur teeth ..i mean stayed away from the water 😛

I was just at FSU for Medical school Deans Day which had all the florida school representatives.

I believe that Dr. hinkley showed a statistic that 399 people were interviewed and roughly 283 were offered acceptances.

So take 283/399 and round that to roughly 300/400, and that will give you the estimated number which was about 75%.

So yes it is true.

That's great that they accept so many. It feels good to be over that hurdle at least. Thanks.

Another Umiami student here. Good luck to all of you applying.

It's great to be a Miami Hurricane.

Good luck to all the Miami applicants! And if you guys have any questions specifically about UMSM@FAU, feel free to send me a PM as I'm one of the students in the first year program.

😀 Yahooo! I got an interview for the end of Jan! I read somewhere that UM is taking up to 30 out of staters...is that true? How many were in last year's entering class?

When you get an interview at miami, does your status page change, or does it still say you're on the ranked list?

I know this might sound a little anal, but I'm out of state, and I got an interview for the end of January. Am I playing a little too late in the game or are my 75% chances still pretty good?

Your chances would still be good even if the interview was in March or April. Good luck.

I believe the above post has a good point, because last year I knew a lady that had gotten interviewed in February some time and got the acceptance letter via email 3 weeks later, like right before spring break.

DrAdams...PM sent. Sorry for being so late in replying.

I'm still available for any UMSM@FAU questions.

do any of you know the status page web address?

Columbus, I PM'd you back.

Unless UMIami is your only interview and only hope of being a med student this year, don't waste your precious $500+. I went believing the rumor of high acceptance rate among the interviewed past year. UMiami was my safety school and I've never been to Miami, so I went. THere were several other out-of-staters. Hinkley gave firm promise that he will let everyone know via email a week later and if we don't hear to call him. Well, two weeks passed and nothing. I sent a gentle email. No response. I called. No response. I called again few days later and the secretary answers telling me that my file is still being reviewed. Well, two days later the status page says "rejected." No email or call, just that. That I am rejected is perfectly fine. But Whatever happened to Hinkley's seemingly friendly promises?!!? 👎 What I learned: they call you for interview to come all the way there just to ignore you with a rejection. Other higher ranking schools are more considerate. Well, I got into two Cali schools and waiting for one top ivy school, so thankfully I don't need any "safety" school any more. BTW UMiami is too expensive ($60,000 + per year!!!!) and they made it very clear that we shouldn't expect any scholarships. Just wanted to warn other out-of-staters from wasting lots of money based on false hopes. They appear to be friendly but they are only so to those that they accept. So I rank UMiami along with those schools that don't even have the basic manners.

I liked somewhat the MIami beach although not at all as good as Cali beaches (Miami beach is too commercialized and super expensive). But I didn't like how the med school is totally separated from the undergrad and other grad schools, intead compactly surrounded by hospitals. Stifling. And to learn that it changed its name just like that for money. Schools that are proud of their traditions would not do such a thing. Imagine Caltech or Harvard becoming CalGate or Gate. That would be a shame.

Miami gives preference to instaters that is probably why you didn't get accepted. The instaters I knew got an email within 3 weeks or some other form of acceptance or status.

Secondly, as far as the name change goes, that is not uncommon among medical schools.

Finch for example started out as the Chicago Medical School and then changed to Finch. More recently it changed its name to Rosalind Franklin medical school.

What about Drexel for that matter? Drexel had been called Hannahamen or something of that nature, don't remember its exact name.

But the point is......a lot of schools have changed their name.

In California one school was originally a DO SCHOOl and changed to an MD school. I believe that is UCI. So don't tell me about tradition.

Miami is full of tradition and all the hospitals give it great and extensive clinical opps especially since it is by the tropics and a big city.

Miami is not a safety school even if you are in state.

It is very selective compared to other schools.

Just some things to think about.

To the other poster:

If you get in and you liked it go for it. If you don't get in and you get an acceptance elsewhere go there. But Miami is actually a very good school for training clinicians.

what is the link to the status page, i was complete there a while ago, but did not know there was a plave to check our status online. Thanks

Jim

I got a small packet from Miami inviting me for an interview, but it seemed that someone posted that they send out a more detailed packet later. is this true?

Hey Just curious while we are talking about the rank list and status page of where your application stands. How do you know where exactly you stand on the rank list.

Is it a good thing or an indifferent matter if your status says you are on the rank list????????

I'm curious not because of myself since I haven't applied yet, but because my friend is in a dilemma. You see he applied last year with 30M I believe on his MCAT and a 3.3 overall gpa 3.5 sci gpa, with ec'S that range from having to always hold a job, teaching karate as a black belt, taking care of his sick grandmother doing CNA type of stuff, to volunteering at a hospital and doing research in neuroscience.

Anyhow, he took the MCAT in august last year so his application was really late and he didn't really get anywhere with getting in.

Anyhow, he reapplied this year but only to florida schools since that is where he is a resident of.

Anyhow, he is on the rank list but his status page hasn't given the place on the rank list.

How do you tell where you stand on the rank list??? Or do they not tell you????

Just curious because this could help him out.

I dont think you can tell where you are on the ranked list. Remember, the ranked list can say that you're in line to receive a secondary application evaluation, an interview invitation, an acceptance, etc. (i think--on my status page it says i'm waiting for an interview invitation, even though i've already been invited). Is he waiting for an interview?

I'm sorry to point this out but neither UCI nor Drexel or not even Finch have any long history or tradition. In fact, they are probably in the same tier as UMiami. So your statement does not contradict mine. Again I'm not upset or trying to bash UMiami. It could be a good school for some. All I wanted was let other out-of-staters know that the rumor is not something to rely on in spending such large some of money for an interview. Well, for the rich kids it doesn't matter.

I think what happened is that you went in thinking it was a safety school after you were selected for an interview, its not. Out of 3,285 applications for my class last year they only interviewed 399. True, you made it past that first big cut and 70% of those interviewed will be accepted but that still means that 30% of the interviewees are rejected post interview. No school has a 100% acceptance rate post interview, it sounds like thats what you were expecting.

Also, they didn't just reject you because you were out of state, a lot of out of state applicants receive acceptances to UMiami. Something must have happened at your actual interview for them to not even put you on the alternate list. You don't always get accepted where you apply, thats life.

Just wanted to say I agree with your assessment about the above poster.

I'm sure you're right. The point was, though, not that I got rejected (someone has to be rejected). It was that Hinkley didn't keep his word. If I'm hiring someone, and he tells me on a certain date and time he will call me to tell me of an important decision, and then he never contacts me let alone a call, what would I do? Surely I won't trust my company to him, since to me he is either a liar or simply irresponsible. This action or misaction of his brought down the image of the whole school since he represents the school.

The process is over for me. I got accepted to two top 5 schools and one Cali and waiting for a decision from one top 5. I wouldn't have gone to UMiami even if I got in due to its high cost. Perhaps as you say I shouldn't have had UMIami and UCI as my "safety" schools. I didn't even get an interview from UCI. Perhaps they somehow sense that they are not my top choices. I don't know. It's over.

Sorry to you UMiami students if I appeared bashing at your school. I wasn't at all. And to the out-of-staters, if UMiami is one of your few options and you have money, go to the interview. It's definitely a relaxing enrivonment.
I was running out of money.
