Has anyone heard anything from MSU since the initial wave of supplements were sent out? starting to get a bit nervous over here.. 😕

Nothing here either. Last I heard they had all my application materials and my application was complete, but they hadn't "reviewed" me yet.
I'm trying to be patient. Really really trying...

i am desperately trying to refrain from emailing them but its so hard! i wish they just sent all of them out at the same time instead of in waves, though I understand why they do that at the same time.. its just more stressful

everyone keep in mind that the email said that we could receive one all the way until the first week in December! We are FAR from out of the mix. If you want to call, I'd say go for it. I've called a few times to check on whether or not my new transcript has arrived. They were always very nice and happy to look up my file. I'm just hoping I hear something before thanksgiving.

I didnt hear anything either but I agree with this comment. All we can do is wait, at this point all the phone calls in the world wont change anything.

Im thinking that they will send supplementals weekly but wont send denials until the second week of December. I think the first set of denails were applicants that didnt meet the minimum requirements. I have spoken with a few applicants on campus that were denied and all of them were told they were missing classes or a class didnt transfer correctly.

That seems slightly bizarre though if they were just missing courses, at least at this point. Granted I know MSU has changed some things around recently, but certainly in the past, you had until...August? of the year you would be entering vet school to complete all the required coursework.

Yeah, the only requirement is that you have at least 50% of the math/science credits complete by the time you send in your application, and 75% of them complete by January 1 or the end of the fall term. All of them must be completed by August 1 of the year you start the program.

The other thing that's changed this year for MSU is they are no longer counting your Fall Semester grades toward your vet school admission. This is my 3rd time applying (the 1st time i applied i got an interview, back when they were doing interviews) - i have been told my grades and experience make me really, really close to getting in - and back in February the Director of Admissions suggested I enroll in a Master's Program, and said that my Fall grades would count toward my admission.

I enrolled in a Master's program, and this fall is my first semester in that program. Then I received the same email - that supplementals may come by 2nd week of Dec at the latest. I emailed an admissions advisor and she said that things had changed, and now Fall grades won't count toward admission.

Basically, there are a bunch of huge changes going on at MSU CVM. There is a new Dean of the vet school, and, as of this past summer, a new Director of Admissions as well. They are no longer doing interviews, so basically they will be churning out a bunch of 4.0 GPA vet students who don't have any people skills. Well, that's my opinion anyway. Oh, and also, due to the economy, MSU is talking about cutting its veterinary technology program, which is a huge shame. That's one of the things that really makes MSU CVM unique - having a vet tech program right there as well, so that vet students and vet tech students can work side-by-side. So yeah, big changes at MSU CVM.

So that's my story with the MSU CVM. Hopefully it will be of some help to you guys who are also applying (or re-applying) this year 🙂

I hope they at least consider experiences and gre scores. Im in trouble if they end up only considering the 100 most competitive gpa's. Id like to imagine they will still attempt to admit candidates they "think" will improve the student body and make good practitioners. (not that I fit in that boat...but I hope so.)

I'm a second year student at Michigan State. Maybe 1 or 2 interviews were done for the class of 2013 and I've heard that the class of 2014 will be similar. We do have a new director of admissions but we do not have a new dean of the vet school.

Budget cuts are unfortunately hitting us hard. It is true that the veterinary technology program is being cut - we are doing everything we can to let MSU administration know cutting the vet tech program is a bad idea. The MSU administration is also looking at cutting the pre-vet advisors as well. CVM administration is talking about adding 2-3 students to each class to help offset some of the budget cuts - I don't remember if this was for the class of 2014 or for the class of 2015.

If you're waiting for a supplemental, hang in there. It is a tough time economically in Michigan, but MSU is an excellent school and I'm happy to be here. Of course, I'll be happier when all these exams are over! 🙂

If you have any questions about MSU, PM me and I'll do my best to answer them. Good luck! :luck:

They consider your experiences only after you've proven that the grades and GRE score is there. They combine your GRE, prerequisites GPA, cumulative GPA, and last 45 credits GPA into a Scholastic Indicator Score (SIS). If your SIS is above the cutoff score, then you move on to the file review, which is where they look at your experiences, letters of recommendation, and supplemental application. So, yeah, your experiences and such are taken into consideration, but if your grades aren't there, they won't even look at your experiences.

My understanding from what an admissions counselor told me is that in previous years, there was no cutoff SIS score. Even if you had a low SIS score, but had great experiences (which was my case in the year I received an interview), they would at least give you a chance. Now that they've implemented a cutoff SIS score, they won't look at your experiences if your score isn't high enough.

dont mean to scare anyone by posting this back up to the top! butttt its edging closer to that first week in december for supplementals to be sent out and having not received one yet im getting a little nervous over here. anyone else heard anything since almost a month ago? :scared:😕

Nothing yet here... I did call them yesterday to confirm that they have all of my materials (which they finally do) since I had to have my GRE scores resent... :lame:

I second that...Im real concerned that there hasn't been ANY word since 10/26. I havent seen anything on the message boards or heard anything on campus from other applicants. Im starting to wonder if they are picking from that first round of supplementals.

Still no word here, and losing hope. I kind of didn't realize until just now that next week is the first week of December... more time with no MSU supplement = more time to prepare for my OSU interview, I suppose. 😳

yeah same lot of nothing here.. strange that they haven't sent out anything in almost a month.. lame

Yeah...Im pretty disappointed in the handling of the supplemental applications. The email sent on the 10/23 laid out a process that it appears wasnt followed. Maybe they still are sending out supplementals but I find it very odd that there hasnt been ANY word since 10/26.

Well...sorry for the rant but im just coming to the realization that I wasnt even invited to fill out the supplemental.

I went back and read the original application e-mail from the assistant Dean and was reminded of this statement, "...The Admissions Office anticipates to request Supplemental Applications around the first week in December. At the same time, those applicants who do not have a competitive SIS will be sent a letter of denial."

Since 5 days are given to complete the supplemental and next tuesday is 12/1 I guess its fair to assume the letter of denial should arrive next week.

yeah, I'm on campus at MSU and I haven't heard of a single person who got their supplemental since that original batch. Don't give up though because i know of a LOT of people with good SIS scores & GPA's who haven't gotten one yet, so im sure they must be sending out more.

keep thinking.. today is monday maybe I will get a supplemental today? hope is slowly slipping away for my IS school 🙁

"original batch"?? so, there are some students who have received supplementals already?

Im not sure how many were sent out but I know of several people on campus and on this message board who received supplementals 10/26. I havent heard anything since that first batch.

Im starting to consider calling admissions and asking if they will be sending out any additional supplementals.

I'm assuming the answer is no, but has anyone who received a supplemental on 10/26 heard anything from MSU since then? I wonder if they've all fallen asleep over there...

I just called the admissions office and was told that supplemental applications will most likely be sent out NEXT week (2nd week in Dec.) and not this week. She said that they are still finishing up

I don't know if I will get one but that is the best news I have heard in two months.

Guys, I wouldn't worry about when you recieve your supplementals...I was OOS last year and got my supplemental late late (like 1st or second week of December). I got accepted in the early batch with no interview so when you recieve it has nothing to do with how competitive you are!!! 🙂 Keep your fingers crossed!!

Oh and also...I too worried that no interviews=socially awkward students...but I was pleasantly surprised! There are a lot of really cool people in my class who actually DO go out and party, hang out and have fun. And of course, study a lot (but that's a given).

Oh Slef always the voice of reason. Let me tell you UMass peeps are freaaaaaking! Love your picture by the way! Hope to see you in Michigan!!! Woot.

just received a supplemental about 10 minutes ago 🙂 yay all hope is not lost!!

I just received one too! Looks like they did not give up on us!! 😀

Congrats to both of you. Im happy for you two but I am not real sure what to think about this situation. They told jpeterman that they most likely wouldnt get around to sending them out until next week, then they send them out an hour later.

Hopefully they are still sending apps out next week because I didnt hear anything today.

I just got mine too at 11:50 😀. So weird because that was probably an hour after they told me that it'd be another week. Holding out high hopes that you all receive one too!

Does anybody know what percentage of overall applicants is usually given the supplemental app? 70? 30? I'm just wondering how big of a step it is in the decission process for them.

I think anyone who meets the SIS score minimum (aka is "competitive") is given the supplemental, so its variable.

I *BELIEVE*, although I am not 100%, that they give out the supplemental to whomever has adequate SIS scores, so I believe it is entirely dependent on who else applies this year. If we have a bunch of super smarties, then we all may be a little more in trouble.

I called this afternoon and was told they still have 300+ apps to review. They are hoping to get all supplementals out by the 17th, in order to have them returned before xmas. So there is still hope...

I got one too this morning. I just got home from work and checked my email.

This is the best news I've heard all day. My (self-calculated) SIS score is over 900, so I've kinda been a little 😕😕😕 over here with no supplemental yet. So you just made my night - thank you!

Hey everyone,

I just called over to the vet school about 2 seconds ago, and the girl told me that they are still in the process of sending out supplementals, that it will be "another couple of weeks" before they are done sending supplementals out. She said they have just finished up evaluating transcripts, and have another 300+ applications to finish looking at. She said their absolute deadline of sending out the last batch of supplementals is "before Christmas". and they have not sent out any letters of denial yet.

So it looks like they are taking a bit longer than the second week of december deadline they said in the email.

Just thought I'd let you all know! Good luck everyone 🙂

Hey everyone, those of you who are working on the supplemental, for research experience do you guys think that they want "what I have learned from lab? or do they want me to describe my actual research?. The prompt "Research Experience:" is a bit vague.

For the first question of the supplemental app, what do they mean about socioeconomic barriers?? i am kind of trying to figure out the importance of the question??

That's a good question. I was wondering the same thing myself. On the one hand, I counted my research exp as vet exp, so I already explained what my studies were about in the previous section. On the other hand, I don't think I could possibly explain the results of my work in 600 characters. What I did was I summarized what my projects were about and basically took them through the whole process of what I did (from proposal/literature review to research paper/defense). Hopefully that's right!

I actually had a question about the "exceptional" vet experience question...what exactly constitutes "exceptional" (seems sort of subjective to me...)? Is it basically anything besides small animal general practice?
